Alan Gilbert opens NY Phil’s 2010-11 season
NEW YORK, Wednesday, September 22 – Alan Gilbert opens his second season as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic with a concert and gala tonight. The performance, to be broadcast on Live From Lincoln Center on PBS and on Classical 105.9 WQXR, launches a remarkable new season in which Gilbert conducts an extraordinarily wide range of repertoire.
Headlining the season-opening concert is the U.S. premiere of Wynton Marsalis’s Swing Symphony (Symphony No. 3), featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with its music director, Marsalis himself, on trumpet.
Alan Gilbert comments on the new work: “It’s all about the history of jazz, starting with African drum rhythms, and going through ragtime and bebop and swing and rumba, up to Marsalis’s jazz. The rehearsal was amazing and everyone is very excited to be working together. There’s a wonderful sense of mutual respect and admiration between the Philharmonic musicians and Marsalis’s Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. I think it will be a great experience.”
Also on the program are two thrilling orchestral showpieces: Richard Strauss’s Don Juan and Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber.
