21C represents Daniil Trifonov – Rubinstein & Tchaikovsky Competition winner

21C Media Group is delighted to announce that it now represents Daniil Trifonov, the 22-year-old Russian pianist whose international competition wins during the 2010-11 season – First Prize in the Rubinstein Competition, First Prize and Grand Prix in the Tchaikovsky Competition, and Third Prize in the Chopin Competition – are matched only by the praise he inspires. Martha Argerich marveled: “He has everything and more, … tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that.” According to the New York Times, “Mr. Trifonov has scintillating technique and a virtuosic flair. He is also a thoughtful artist. … He can play with soft-spoken delicacy, not what you associate with competition conquerors.

The coming season promises to be a banner one for the young pianist, crowned by the release of his debut Deutsche Grammophon album as an exclusive recording artist for the illustrious label, which coincides with his return to Carnegie Hall. Further recital engagements take Trifonov from Chicago to London, Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Amsterdam, Rio de Janeiro, and a host of other international musical hotspots. He also looks forward to a similarly extensive lineup of orchestral collaborations, playing seven different concertos in dates with 19 of the world’s foremost orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Washington’s National Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, the London Symphony Orchestra, and Rome’s Orchestra Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. And chamber highlights include a duo recital tour with his teacher and fellow pianist Sergei Babayan, kicking off with a gala concert at the Dallas Chamber Music Society.

It was last February – the day before his triumphant main-stage Carnegie Hall recital debut – that Trifonov signed the exclusive agreement with Deutsche Grammophon. As the first release of their new partnership, the label will issue a live recording of that performance on January 28 in the U.S., entitled Trifonov: The Carnegie Recital. The disc features Liszt’s formidable B-minor Sonata, Scriabin’s “Sonata-Fantasy” in G-sharp minor, and Chopin’s 24 Preludes. As the New York Times reported, Trifonov’s “soulful artistry and virtuoso chops were in full evidence” in the Liszt; he gave a beautifully shaped, introspective, and elegantly colored interpretation” of the Scriabin; and revealed his “warm, intimate touch” in Chopin.

The new album release is timed to coincide with Trifonov’s return to Carnegie Hall on February 6, when he plays Schumann’s formidable yet lush Symphonic Etudes alongside works by Ravel, Schoenberg, and Stravinsky. This same program serves as the vehicle for his Symphony Hall recital debut, presented by the Chicago Symphony (Feb 9), as well as for appearances at London’s Wigmore Hall (Oct 8); Cologne’s Philharmonie (Oct 2); Vienna’s Konzerthaus (March 31); in Sacile (Sep 30), Padua (Oct 10), and Trento (Oct 11) in Italy; Akron, OH (Feb 4); Portland, OR (March 9); and France’s Orléans (April 11). With a program that combines the Schumann with Chopin’s Preludes and Debussy’s “Reflets dans l’eau,” Trifonov gives recitals at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw (Oct 6), Paris’s Auditorium du Louvre (Oct 23), and in Ghent (Oct 4), Munich (Oct 14), and Basel (Oct 25). His intensive recital tour schedule also takes him to the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro (Nov 13), and includes multiple dates in France, Italy, Germany, and Sweden.

This season the young pianist adds Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto to a repertoire in which the Russian composer’s orchestral music already figures prominently. His first performance of the work was on the occasion of his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in August, two days after his Tanglewood recital debut. He reprises the beloved concerto at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Miguel Harth-Bedoya (Sep 10), and with the Minnesota Orchestra (Feb 20-23). Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto, which Trifonov looks forward to performing with the Finnish Radio Symphony (Dec 19-20), is already a staple of his repertoire; it was after hearing his take on the work that the Financial Times pronounced him “a tremendously exciting artist,” and TheaterJones agreed: “Trifonov delivered a stunning, powerful yet lyric, and completely original, interpretation. We heard the piece anew. And that is saying something.”

Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is also a Trifonov specialty; the San Diego Union-Tribune reports: “It was as if he was plugged into Rachmaninoff’s psyche. … His flawless technique was astonishing, yet every note was tied to some musical impulse.” Over the coming season, he plays the Rhapsody in high-profile debut appearances with the National Symphony under Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC (March 13-15), and for his debuts with the San Francisco Symphony under Osmo Vänskä (Jan 30–Feb 1), Detroit Symphony (Feb 13-15), and Houston Symphony (Feb 28–March 2). The Rhapsody also serves as the vehicle for international engagements with Brazil’s Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (Nov 7-10) and Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira (Nov 16-17), the Oslo Philharmonic (Jan 8), and Rome’s Orchestra Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (March 20-25).

Concertos by three more of Trifonov’s Russian compatriots are featured in the coming season, too. For performances with the Pittsburgh Symphony led by Yan Pascal Tortelier (Oct 31–Nov 4), the pianist is soloist in Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2. The UK’s Telegraph considered his interpretation of the piece a “real revelation,” explaining: “His technical abilities were spellbinding…yet they were all harnessed to serve a profoundly lyrical vision of the piece.” With the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Trifonov plays Scriabin’s Concerto in F-sharp minor (Oct 15-18), and with Valery Gergiev leading the Mariinsky Orchestra in Paris (Nov 29–Dec 1) and Italy’s Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI (Dec 5-6), he takes part in Shostakovich’s Concerto for piano, trumpet and strings.

At the 2011 Tchaikovsky Competition, Trifonov was not only awarded the First Prize, Gold Medal, Grand Prix, and Audience Award, but also the Award for the Best Performance of a Mozart Concerto. With the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden at La Scala in Milan, he looks forward to playing Mozart’s Concerto No. 20, K. 466 (Oct 20). Similarly, at the 2011 Rubinstein Competition, besides triumphing in the general competition, winning the prize for best chamber performance, and the Audience Favorite Prize, he was awarded the Prize for Best Performance of a Chopin Piece. Rounding out his 2013-14 orchestral lineup, Trifonov will perform the Polish composer’s Second Piano Concerto with the Moscow Philharmonic (Dec 15-17), and on tours with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen (Jan 18-24), and the London Symphony Orchestra under Gergiev (April 1-17).

In addition to his solo and concerto engagements, the young pianist will also join his teacher, pianist Sergei Babayan, for a three-date U.S. duo recital tour (March 3-7), and play Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G minor with the Pavel Haas Quartet at the Auditorium du Louvre in Paris (Nov 27-30) and London’s Wigmore Hall (Dec 2).
