Angela Meade stars in Met’s Live in HD broadcast of “Ernani” Feb 25

Soprano Angela Meade, recipient of the 2011 Richard Tucker Award and the 2012 Beverly Sills Artist Award from the Metropolitan Opera, stars as Elvira in the live broadcast of Verdi’s Ernani in the Met’s Live in HD series, on Saturday, February 25. The HD broadcast to cinemas worldwide caps what WQXR called the singer’s “star-making” run in the Met production this month. In its review of Ernani, the Associated Press declared that Meade offered “one vocal thrill after another. Her forte notes are true to the top of the register, her piano notes glisten, and her improved lower tones growl with ferocity. Her cavatina `Ernani, Ernani, involami (Ernani, Ernani, save me)’ was among the moments of the Met season, with Meade displaying disciplined breath control in her coloratura.”

In his review of the opening of Ernani, Anthony Tommasini of the New York Times said, “Just days after the announcement that the American soprano Angela Meade, 34, had won this year’s Beverly Sills Artist Award, a $50,000 prize, she earned a big, deserved ovation for her Elvira. Last fall, she sang three performances of the title role in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena in the Met production created for Anna Netrebko. Ms. Meade’s Elvira showed what an uncommonly gifted rising artist is capable of. Her voice is plush and penetrating, though the power comes effortlessly from the body and richness of her sound. Her top notes soared over the orchestra. Yet just as impressive were her finespun pianissimo phrases.”

Meade will appear in the Met’s Ernani broadcast alongside Marcello Giordani, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and Ferruccio Furlanetto, with Marco Armiliato conducting. Armiliato first conducted Meade at the Grand Finals Concert of the 2007 Met Opera National Council Auditions, a process chronicled in the documentary film The Audition. Elvira is the role with which the soprano made an unscheduled “star is born” professional stage debut at the Met in 2008, substituting for an ill colleague.

In March, Meade makes her Canadian debut with Montreal’s Orchestre Métropolitain under Yannick Nézet-Séguin, singing in Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony. And in May, she appears for the first time with Deutsche Oper Berlin for a concert performance of Verdi’s I due Foscari.
