ArkivMusic’s Innovative ArkivCD Reissue Program Hits 7,000 Titles

Bryn Mawr, PA: Just 30 months after the launch of its innovative ArkivCD reissue program, ArkivMusic, The Source for Classical Music™ (www.arkivmusic.com) has reached the milestone total of 7,000 titles, up from 6,000 only six months ago.  These CDs, which are produced using a just-in-time manufacturing system with full liner notes and packaging, are available exclusively from the online classical music retailer.  Most are titles that have been deleted by their labels, but some have never been available in the U.S. until now – including a selection of Philadelphia Orchestra CDs under longtime music director Eugene Ormandy, previously released only in Japan.

ArkivMusic president Eric Feidner states:

“Imagine the countless hours in recording studios and concert halls that have gone into creating these 7,000 albums… . We’ve restored the complete discographies of some artists, entire artistic lifetimes that were otherwise going unheard.  It’s a magnificent milestone accomplishment, and yet, we have so much more to do!  Anyone who thinks classical recordings go out-of-print based on any qualitative criteria will be considerably enlightened by browsing the ArkivCD recommendations on ArkivMusic.”

Among the latest additions are several RCA albums by the Guarneri String Quartet – which is retiring this season – and some landmark early Epic/Columbia albums by pianist Leon Fleisher. In all, huge portions of the Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, Philips, EMI, Virgin, RCA, and Columbia catalogs (to name just a few labels) are now back in production.

Feidner is a proponent of “Long Tail” marketing, which maintains that selling small quantities of a wide range of items is a profitable business model.  As Netflix does with movies, ArkivMusic offers the widest selection of classical recordings available anywhere: over 90,000 CDs and DVDs.  The company is dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and efficient distribution of classical music recordings, with the goal of making them available easily and conveniently at fair prices to the broadest possible classical customer base.

The Feidners launched ArkivMusic in 2002, and have since struck agreements with dozens of classical labels for the ArkivCD reissue program.  During the decline of brick-and-mortar retailing, thousands of treasured performances were deleted for non-artistic reasons.  Now over 7,000 are back as ArkivCDs.
