Aug 9: The Violin Channel to Stream Live Orchestral Concert from Taiwan’s Taipei Music Academy & Festival (TMAF)

Home audiences around the world will be able to catch the final concert of the second annual Taipei Music Academy & Festival (TMAF) when it streams on The Violin Channel on August 9 at 2:30pm EDT. Drawing the week-long Taiwanese summer program to a triumphant close, the performance will take place before a live audience at the National Concert Hall in Taipei. There the 35 outstanding young string players of TMAF 2020 will perform works for chamber orchestra by Elgar, Tchaikovsky, Grieg and Vivaldi, in whose Concerto for Four Violins they will be joined by faculty members David Chan, concertmaster of the Met Orchestra, and Philip Setzer, violinist of the Emerson Quartet; special guest Yu-Chien Tseng, a top prize-winner at the Queen Elisabeth and Tchaikovsky International Competitions; and Founder and Artistic Director Cho-Liang “Jimmy” Lin. The webcast will stream on both The Violin Channel’s website and its Facebook page.

It was celebrated violinist, curator and educator Lin who founded TMAF last summer. Now, at a time when almost all musical activity remains virtual worldwide, the program’s second season brings together the 35 handpicked young musicians with a stellar international faculty for a week of performance, mentorship, coaching, masterclasses and more in the idyllic mountainside setting of the Taipei National University of the Arts (Aug 2–9). Reaping the benefits of the exemplary Taiwanese response to the pandemic, which has seen just seven casualties in a population of 24 million, the program’s return represents a rare, perhaps unique opportunity for emerging classical artists to experience live, in-person training and performance anywhere in the world this summer. The Violin Channel’s upcoming webcast, scheduled to stream twelve hours after the concert to accommodate the time difference (as well as live for local viewers), offers Western audiences the chance to share in their good fortune and enjoy one of the summer’s few new orchestral experiences.
