Award-Winning Dover Quartet Makes Recording Debut with All-Mozart Album, Tours with Edgar Meyer and Avi Avital, Gives First Complete Beethoven Cycles, and More This Season

Fresh from a banner season, the Dover Quartet juggernaut gathers steam in 2016-17, with several notable firsts ahead for the group the New Yorker calls “the young American quartet of the moment.” After making its recording debut this fall with the release of an all-Mozart album on the Cedille label, the quartet embarks on a pair of North American tours, first in company with double-bassist Edgar Meyer and then with mandolin virtuoso Avi Avital; makes debuts in eleven cities across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland; performs at Washington’s Kennedy Center and in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, and two dozen more U.S. cities; and launches the second leg of its three-year residencies at Northwestern University and the Peoples’ Symphony Concerts in New York. Over the course of the season, the Dovers also undertake the first complete Beethoven quartet cycles of their career, at the Montreal Chamber Music Festival, the University of Connecticut, and SUNY Buffalo, where they follow in the footsteps of the Budapest, Guarneri and Cleveland Quartets by performing the master composer’s complete quartet output in the university’s famous “Slee Cycle” series.

Tribute: Dover Quartet Plays Mozart, available from Cedille Records, Oct 14

The quartet makes its recording debut with an album of especial personal and musical significance. As the New Yorker recently wrote: “This outstanding quartet, which is already carving out an individual style, stands as the inheritor of the Curtis Institute’s proud neo-Romantic tradition.” It was at Curtis that the Dover Quartet first formed, and there that its members studied and took coaching from members of the legendary Guarneri Quartet. As the Dovers’ cellist, Camden Shaw, explains in an insightful liner note:

“All four of us grew up listening to, and falling in love with the Guarneri’s recordings; there is a grittiness, an emotional potency, and a constantly shifting balance between individuality and blend that makes their playing transcendent. It’s no overstatement to say that even before we met and studied with members of the Guarneri, they had already shaped the way we felt about chamber music.”

Because of this profound and formative influence, on their first recording the Dovers determined to pay their respects to the older ensemble. Recorded at Curtis last December, and due for release by Cedille Records on October 14, Tribute: Dover Quartet Plays Mozart pairs the composer’s two final string quartets – in B-flat, K. 589 and F, K. 590 – with his Quintet in C minor. This program recalls the Guarneri’s own first recording, made for RCA Red Seal 50 years ago this year, so it is fitting that Michael Tree – the Guarneri’s founding violist and one of the Dovers’ most valued mentors – joins them on the quintet. The new album thus represents a symbolic passing of the mantle from the older group to the younger one; as the Chicago Tribune observed, shortly before the recording sessions, “The Dover Quartet players have it in them to become the next Guarneri String Quartet – they’re that good.

The group has also already recorded its follow-up title for Cedille: a World War II-themed collection of quartets by Viktor Ullmann, Simon Laks, and Shostakovich, due for release next fall.

North American tours with Edgar Meyer and Avi Avital

Shortly after the album release, the Dover Quartet embarks on the first of two high-profile collaborations, a five-city U.S. tour with five-time Grammy Award-winning bassist Edgar Meyer. In Philadelphia (Oct 21), Pittsburgh (Oct 23), Tucson (Oct 26), Portland, OR (Oct 28), and San Francisco (Oct 30), they join forces for Rossini’s Duet for Cello and Double Bass and the bassist-composer’s own bluegrass-inflected Quintet for Strings. The programs also variously include works by Mozart, Haydn, Dvořák, Smetana, and David Ludwig, whose Pale Blue Dot – a depiction of Earth, as seen from deep space – was written for and subsequently premiered and championed by the group. Next spring sees the Dovers reunite with Meyer at Georgia’s Savannah Music Festival, where they also give a concert with the festival’s Associate Artistic Director, violinist Daniel Hope (April 2 & 4).

It was at the 2014 Savannah Music Festival that the quartet teamed up with Avi Avital – the first mandolin soloist to be nominated for a classical Grammy – to play Cymbeline, which was composed for him by David Bruce. Now, for their second collaboration of the season, the Dovers rejoin the Israeli mandolinist to reprise the piece alongside Six Miniatures for String Quartet and Mandolin by the late Georgian composer Sulkhan Tsintsadze, and Smetana’s First Quartet (“From My Life”). This is their program for performances in Arkansas (Dec 6), Tennessee (Feb 7), and on a West Coast tour that takes in Toronto’s Koerner Hall (Feb 11), Portland’s Chamber Music Northwest (Feb 15), and Eugene’s Oregon Bach Festival (Feb 18), as well as dates in San Diego (Feb 16 & 17) and Vancouver (Feb 19). Click here to hear the Dover Quartet and Avital play “Sunrise,” the opening movement of Cymbeline.

Eleven debuts on tour in Europe

Although no strangers to Europe, where they added a top prize at London’s Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition to their numerous honors, the Dovers have yet to appear at Salzburg, Stuttgart, Bern, or any of the other cities where they now look forward to making debuts in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland (March 11-27). They undertake the tour with a program of Beethoven, Schubert, Smetana, Britten, Barber, and Pulitzer Prize-winner Caroline Shaw, whose Plan & Elevation (The Grounds of Dumbarton Oaks) was another recent commission for them.

Complete Beethoven cycles in Buffalo, Connecticut, and Montreal

It was in Beethoven that the Dovers’ performance impressed the Santa Fe New Mexican as “string quartet nirvana.” Now the quartet offers the first complete Beethoven cycles of its career, in six programs spread throughout the season in each of three cities. The first takes place at SUNY Buffalo, in the university’s celebrated “Slee Cycle” series. Named for the Buffalo resident Frederick Slee, whose wife, Alice, set up a bequest in his name to fund it, the “Slee” is probably the only concert series in the world to present Beethoven’s complete string quartets each year. Inaugurated in 1955 by the great Budapest Quartet, the series will feature the Dover in six concerts throughout the season, the repertoire presented in the special sequence desired by Mr. Slee (Sep 29 & 30; March 8 & 9; April 6 & 7). Besides presenting all-Beethoven programs in Chicago (Sep 28) and Seattle (Oct 7 & 8), the quartet performs further complete Beethoven cycles at the University of Connecticut (Nov 15 & 17; Feb 28, March 2; April 25 & 27) and the Montreal Chamber Music Festival (May 26–June 11). During their Montreal residency, the Dovers also take time out to play Mendelssohn’s beloved Octet with the winners of the upcoming Banff International String Quartet Competition, at which they themselves took the Grand Prize and all three Special Prizes in 2013.

Northwestern and Peoples’ Symphony Concerts residencies; return to Kennedy Center; more

The Dover Quartet has already undertaken residencies at both its alma maters, Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and the Curtis Institute, where it became the conservatory’s first Quartet-in-Residence in 2013-14. Now the group launches the second year of its prestigious three-season residency at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music with a full program of concert performances, coaching, masterclasses, and open rehearsals spread throughout the season (Oct 18-20; Nov 28–30; Jan 15–17; Jan 30–Feb 1; Feb 20-22; April 16-19; May 21–23).

The 2016-17 season also sees the Dovers continue their appointment as the first Ensemble-in-Residence in the 116-year history of the Peoples’ Symphony Concerts in New York City. Spanning a three-and-a-half-year period through fall 2018, the residency encompasses multiple recitals, outreach activities in city public schools, and the commissioning of a new composition by an emerging composer of the quartet’s choosing. This season, the Dovers give two performances in the venerable concert series, playing quartets by Mozart, Beethoven, and Britten (Dec 10) and collaborating with clarinetist Richard Stoltzman on Brahms, alongside music by Haydn and Shostakovich (May 7).

The Dovers’ intensive U.S. touring schedule also takes them from Harrisburg to Honolulu, and includes returns to New York – for appearances at the DiMenna Center (Jan 14), Mannes College (April 30), and the Advent Lutheran Church, where they give the New York premiere of Shaw’s Plan and Elevation in the Upper West Side church’s celebrated “Music Mondays” series (Sep 26) – and to Washington’s Kennedy Center, where, according to the Washington Post, their debut was “a triumph” that showed “why they should be on [music lovers’] must-hear list.”

Past season highlights, crowned by Carnegie debut and Cleveland Quartet Award win

This full 2016-17 lineup follows a landmark season for the group. The Dover Quartet received two new honors, being named winner of the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons, and recognized with the 2016 Hunt Family Award, one of the inaugural Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Awards. In addition, the Dovers gave more than 120 concerts around the world, including four concerts at Washington’s Dumbarton Oaks and two major New York debuts: in the Lincoln Center Great Performers series, playing Schumann and Shostakovich, and at Carnegie Hall, where their thoughtfully curated program of Beethoven, Dvořák and Berg was designed not only to be compelling and musically coherent, but also to showcase something of the genre’s expressive capabilities and their own interpretive range. Besides launching newly created residencies at Northwestern University and the Peoples’ Symphony Concerts, the quartet embarked on its first tour of Israel, undertook three European tours, gave its first performances at Yale University and the Lucerne Festival, and performed for many of the most important sponsors in the States. As Strad magazine notes, “with their exceptional interpretive maturity, tonal refinement and taut ensemble,” the Dovers are “pulling away from their peers.”
