Brooklyn Rider and Gabriel Kahane Release The Fiction Issue (Feb 5), Tour Both Coasts
This February, Brooklyn Rider – “four classical musicians performing with the energy of young rock stars” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) – along with multi-faceted instrumentalist, singer and composer Gabriel Kahane, releases a disc of Kahane’s music called The Fiction Issue. A cycle of nine songs on texts by Kahane gives the album its title, and features eclectic singer Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond. The cycle had its premiere at Carnegie Hall in 2012, with Brooklyn Rider, Kahane and Worden performing; the New York Times described it as “fus[ing] art-song and pop-ballad conventions into something new and entrancing, including rich, potent string-quartet writing embellished with piano.” The Fiction Issue marks Kahane’s first chamber music recording and includes his Come On All You Ghosts, which he performs with the group, as well as Bradbury Studies, a new string quartet he wrote for Brooklyn Rider based on “Bradbury (304 Broadway)” from his album The Ambassador. The disc can be pre-ordered here, with two tracks available immediately for streaming or download, and the complete album to follow on February 5.
Brooklyn Rider will tour with Kahane in support of the new release in late January and early February, beginning on the West Coast with a pair of concerts at Stanford University’s Bing Concert Hall, and then in Portland and Seattle. These are followed by East Coast dates in Hartford; at the Celebrity Series of Boston; Washington Performing Arts; and in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn date that closes out the tour (Feb 7) is at the celebrated new venue National Sawdust, where the group is in residence.
Kahane, described by the New York Times as “emblematic of a growing Brooklyn aesthetic that renders moot distinctions among so-called high and low forms of art,” is a natural addition to Brooklyn Rider’s growing family of collaborators. The eclectic quartet’s recent groundbreaking multi-disciplinary project, the Brooklyn Rider Almanac, features a long roster of composer-collaborators, from Wilco’s Glen Kotche to jazz icon Bill Frisell to Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier. Other recent performances have featured the likes of mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, saxophonist Joshua Redman, and banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck, among many others.
Before heading out on the road with Kahane, Brooklyn Rider sets out on its own for concerts in New Orleans, Denver, and Montana. Later this spring, the quartet tours Europe with stops in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway.
