Chanticleer spring tour 2010
Chanticleer continues its busy touring schedule with a host of concerts throughout the East Coast, including performances this month in Philadelphia’s Verizon Hall (April 7), New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (April 10), and Boston’s Jordan Hall (April 11). In May the group’s schedule keeps it hopping between concerts in the Midwest and the West Coast, including performances in Portland, OR (May 3 & 4), St. Louis, MO (May 7), and Omaha, NE (May 11). Following the enormous success of its first National Youth Choral Festival in San Francisco, the ensemble will continue its ambitious program of educational outreach with a number of special events including residencies and interactive educational events in Bethlehem, PA (April 17), Cookeville, TN (April 21), Lima, OH (April 24), Portland, OR (May 4), and Malibu, CA (May 13). After giving the final concerts of its Bay Area season, featuring a program entitled “For Thy Soul’s Salvation: Music for England’s Monarchs” (June 2-5), Chanticleer returns to China for the second year running, where it will join San Francisco’s delegation, and perform at Shanghai’s Expo 2010 (June 16-23). In most tour cities, Chanticleer will perform a program entitled, “In Time Of… Songs of Love & Loss, War & Peace,” which comprises a wide range of repertoire including music by Palestrina, Dufay, Janequin, Ligeti, Chen Yi, Sametz, McGlynn, Bates, Gershwin, and others. For the concerts in St. Louis and Portland, the group will present “The Divine Orlando,” a program showcasing the exquisitely expressive music of Franco-Flemish Renaissance master Orlando di Lasso (1532?-94).
Chanticleer’s current season has had many memorable highlights thus far, including its fifth appearance in as many years on NBC TV’s popular Today show and on A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor and Frederica von Stade; a European tour taking in many of the continent’s legendary halls; and, most recently, the group’s first National Youth Choral Festival. The festival featured Chanticleer hosting twelve high school choirs – 416 students in all – from across the country in a four-day choral immersion, including master classes, language coaching, and a host of interactive educational activities, culminating in a gala concert with the massed choirs, an orchestra comprised of Bay Area student instrumentalists, and mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade.
