Daniel Hope: winter 2010-11

When violinist Daniel Hope returns to New York for two performances of Baroque works with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (Dec 10 & 12), the program features material from his latest Deutsche Grammophon album, Air, a baroque journey.  Between the two concerts, Hope heads downtown for a duo recital with pianist Wu Han in the Peoples’ Symphony Concerts series (Dec 11).  For his final New York appearance this December, Hope joins cellist Paul Watkins for Brahms’s Double Concerto with the New York String Orchestra under Jaime Laredo at Carnegie Hall (Dec 28).

Released earlier this year, Air, a baroque journey has earned glowing reviews from critics around the world; Gramophone magazine declared:

“This is an exciting disc, with a heady, pied-piper power over the listener that comes from realizing that the bright sense of discovery once felt by these composers is being experienced just as much by their modern-day interpreters.  You can’t ask for much more than that.”

The Chamber Music Society program features a concerto by Telemann, a sonata by Domenico Scarlatti, and rarely heard pieces by Westhoff, Matteis, and Falconieri – all works captured on Air, a baroque journey.  The concerts on December 10 and 12 also include other major works from Hope’s discography: Bach’s Double Concerto in D minor (as on the violinist’s 2006 Warner Classics album devoted to the composer) and Vivaldi’s Trio Sonata “La Follia” (as featured on Hope’s Grammy Award-nominated DG all-Vivaldi release of 2009).

Before the second Chamber Music Society performance, Hope joins pianist Wu Han for a duo recital at the Washington Irving High School on December 11.  This concert is part of the Peoples’ Symphony Concerts series, held annually to offer New Yorkers low-cost performances by today’s leading classical music stars.  Hope and Wu Han present works by Brahms, Schulhoff, Messiaen, and Franck at this Saturday evening event.

At Carnegie Hall on December 28, Hope performs Brahms’s Double Concerto with cellist Paul Watkins and the New York String Orchestra led by Jaime Laredo.  Hope’s U.S. presence will continue into 2011.  He and his frequent collaborator, pianist Jeffrey Kahane, will tour North America, starting in San Francisco on February 10 and continuing to Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Orono, ME, before concluding in Purchase, NY on February 20.  In 2011, Hope will serve his eighth season as associate artistic director of Georgia’s multi-genre Savannah Music Festival, where he will perform in a series of chamber and orchestral concerts, one of which features the Bruch Violin Concerto with the Atlanta Symphony, from March 24 to April 5.

Hope’s next DG album: A celebration of Joseph Joachim

An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon recording artist, Hope’s next disc is planned for international release in early 2011 (date tba).  The album is a celebration of the life and work of Joseph Joachim, the 19th-century virtuoso violinist-composer and Brahms’s key collaborator and friend.  The recording features both famous pieces and lesser-known works associated with Joachim, including Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and two of Joachim’s own compositions, the Notturno for violin and orchestra and the Romance for violin and piano.  The album will include Joachim’s arrangements of Brahms’s Hungarian Dances Nos. 1 and 5 in a new version for violin and strings, as well as an arrangement for violin and orchestra by Franz Waxman of Dvorák’s Humoresque, Op. 101, No. 7.  Finally, Hope will switch from violin to viola for Brahms’s Wiegenlied, joined by mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter (one of the violinist’s frequent partners on record and in concert) and pianist Bengt Forsberg.  The orchestral items feature the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic conducted by Sakari Oramo.

Performer, writer, broadcaster…

When not making music, Hope is an enthusiastic writer and broadcaster, and he keeps a wide-ranging video blog on his web site: danielhope.com.  Hope’s vblog has presented his discussions with the rock icon Sting (on the nexus of popular and classical music), mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter (on music composed in the Nazi concentration camp Theresienstadt), and veteran conductor-scholar Christopher Hogwood (on Mendelssohn).  The violinist’s latest video blog item is on his “Tu Was!” (Do Something!) series of benefit concerts, of which the latest event is an August concert in Germany, supported by Prince Charles, to help raise awareness of climate protection and the need to end rainforest destruction.

As adept with old media as with new, Hope has written two German-language books, including the acclaimed family memoir-investigation Familienstücke (Family Album), a bestseller in Germany.  Last year, he published his second book in German, Wann darf ich klatschen? (When Do I Applaud?), for which foreign language rights have been sold to Korea, Japan, Croatia, and Russia.  He is currently at work on his third book, to be published in March 2011.

Not only a performer, Hope is an impresario, helping to curate two major music festivals.  This year, he served his first summer as artistic partner at Germany’s Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, which saw 123 concerts in over 90 venues, for an audience of 72,000.  For the past seven seasons, Hope has been associate artistic director of the Savannah Music Festival in Georgia, and his web site features a video blog about his experience there this past spring.
