Daniel Hope’s summer 2012 spans Aspen, L.A., Europe
British violinist Daniel Hope brings his “probing intellect and commanding style” (New York Times) as soloist, chamber musician and artistic director to venues this summer ranging from the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado and the Hollywood Bowl in California to Germany’s Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival and the Verbier Festival in Switzerland. At Aspen and the Hollywood Bowl in July, he will perform Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2, plus a recital at Aspen with pianist Jeffrey Kahane featuring works by Ravel, Walton, Mendelssohn, and Schulhoff. Having performed with many of the world’s major orchestras and ensembles, Hope is increasingly in the spotlight as a creative director. This will be Hope’s third summer as artistic director of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, where, in addition to performing concerts of his own, he has invited musician colleagues from Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble ACJW, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and the Savannah Music Festival, where he is also associate artistic director. At the Verbier Festival in July, Hope will perform two concerts of chamber works by Bruch, Schubert, von Weber, Taneyev and Schulhoff, plus a chamber concert paying homage to Jewish composers interned at the Terezin concentration camp.
The first of the violinist’s two Aspen appearances this summer will be on July 8 as soloist in Prokofiev’s Russian- and Spanish-tinged Violin Concerto No. 2, with Thomas Sondergard leading the Aspen Festival Orchestra in a performance at the Benedict Music Tent. Hope will take on violin sonatas by Ravel (Op. posth.), Walton, Schulhoff (No. 2), and Mendelssohn (F major) at a July 10 recital with pianist Jeffrey Kahane at Aspen’s Harris Concert Hall. For Hope’s July 12 date at the Hollywood Bowl, Leonard Slatkin will lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Hope in the Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 2.
The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival takes place throughout the entire state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in northeastern Germany from June to September, making it one of the largest festivals in Europe. In his role as artistic director, Hope programmed three June concerts in Heiligendamm, Schwerin and Greifswald, calling it the Carnegie Hall Project. On June 13, members of Ensemble ACJW—the performing arm of The Academy, a program of Carnegie Hall, the Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education— performed chamber works by composers once banned by the Nazis. On June 14, Ensemble ACJW and Hope performed works by Poulenc, Tansman, Bartók, Messiaen and Schumann, and on June 15, Hope and ACJW joined the Concertino Ensemble Rostock for a chamber program of works by Haas, Schulhoff, Klein, and Mendelssohn, conducted by Jeffrey Kahane. During the same festival in August, Hope has programmed three concerts featuring musicians from the Savannah Music Festival, where he also serves as associate artistic director. The Savannah Project’s opening concert on August 8 in Rühn will feature Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Themes for Clarinet, String Quartet, and Piano; Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F minor; and Schubert’s Octet in F (Op. posth. 166, D 803). The repertoire for the two remaining Savannah Project concerts on August 9 and 10 in Bad Doberan and Kotelow will range from Richard Strauss, Dvorák and Beethoven to Edgar Meyer and Brahms. Four programs in August and September at the Mecklenburg festival will include the participation of Hope’s longtime Chamber Music of Lincoln Center colleagues, with pianist Wu Han and cellist David Finckel foremost among them. On August 29 in Heiligendamm, violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky and violist Paul Neubauer join Wu Han and Finckel to perform a program of Beethoven, Adolphe, and Fauré; an August 30 concert in Bützow brings together the same artists plus Hope and cellist Li-Wei Qin performing works by Dohnányi, Menotti, and Arenski. On August 31 in Schönberg and on September 2 in Samow, mezzo Sasha Cooke will join the Lincoln Center instrumentalists in works by Chausson, Bolcom, Mahler and Brahms.
In July, Hope takes a few days off from his duties as Mecklenburg’s artistic director to perform in three chamber programs at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland. The first, on July 22, is entitled “Theresienstadt Hommage” and focuses on Jewish composers killed at the Terezin concentration camp. On July 24, Gábor Takács-Nagy will lead Hope and the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra in works by Schulhoff, Bruch, and Schubert, and on July 25, Hope will perform with soloists such as violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky, violist Yuri Bashmet and clarinetist Martin Fröst in chamber works by Weber and Taneyev.
