Daniel Hope’s summer includes his Ravinia Festival debut

British violinist Daniel Hope will have a characteristically exciting summer on both sides of the Atlantic, with stateside activities including his Ravinia Festival debut on June 23. He will perform Max Richter’s Vivaldi Recomposed with the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra. Hope’s Deutsche Grammophon recording of Vivaldi Recomposed was declared nothing less than “bewitchingly brilliant” by the Wall Street Journal; it was also named iTunes’ Best Contemporary Classical Album in the U.S. for 2012. (For a preview of Hope in Vivaldi Recomposed, see the NPR Music video of a concert from New York’s Poisson Rouge.) The violinist’s summer includes performances at the Aspen Music Festival, with Vivaldi Recomposed (July 11) and, to mark the centenary of the composer’s birth, Britten’s Violin Concerto (July 14). He will also perform at the Sante Fe Chamber Music Festival, in works ranging from Brahms to Schulhoff (July 17-22). Hope’s activities across the pond include his final run as artistic director of Germany’s Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festspiele from June to September, featuring concerts in league with his friends from the Savannah Music Festival (July 5-6) and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (Aug 28–Sept 1.) This past season, Hope celebrated his 10th anniversary as associate artistic director of the Savannah Music Festival.

In the UK this summer, Hope will take a star turn at the BBC Proms in London on July 29, performing Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2  (to be broadcast on radio and TV by the BBC). As part of his concluding season as artistic director of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festspiele, Hope will not only perform with musicians from Savannah on Tour and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center; he will also perform Vivaldi Recomposed (July 26), as well as concerts with the Big Band der Volksoper Wien (June 28-29) and works of Britten, Schulhoff and more.

Hope’s schedule in Europe includes recitals with pianist Sebastian Knauer in Germany and Prague, and an August concert of Vivaldi Recomposed and more with the Lucerne Festival Strings at Switzerland’s Lucerne Festival, where Hope is principal guest artist. Finally, in September, Hope plays a series of concerts at the Merano Festival in Italy, including not only Vivaldi Recomposed, a recital with Knauer and a Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center event, but also music from the violinist’s latest DG album Spheres – the lauded, astronomy-inspired release that takes in repertoire ranging from the Baroque to the 21st century. Reviewing the album, Germany’s Kaltblut magazine said that Hope is “a virtuoso who has the power to move the coldest of hearts, stir the deepest and most hidden emotions.” You can see Hope talk about Spheres with the BBC here.
