Daniil Trifonov plays Prokofiev 2 for Pittsburgh Symphony debut (Oct 31–Nov 4)

On Thursday, October 31, Daniil Trifonov, winner of the Tchaikovsky and Rubinstein competitions, will make his Pittsburgh Symphony debut as soloist in Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto. When he performed the virtuosic work for this year’s season-opening concert at the Edinburgh Festival, the UK’s Telegraph pronounced the Russian pianist’s interpretation a “real revelation”; the five-star review continued: “His technical abilities were spellbinding…yet they were all harnessed to serve a profoundly lyrical vision of the piece.” Under Yan Pascal Tortelier’s direction, Trifonov will reprise the concerto for three dates at the orchestra’s home in Heinz Hall, Pittsburgh (Oct 31; Nov 2 & 3) and a fourth at West Virginia University (Nov 4). This collaboration is one of the pianist’s seven U.S. orchestral debuts this season, which also sees his return to Carnegie Hall, and the release of his first Deutsche Grammophon album.

In 2012-13, the young pianist made debuts with all the “Big Five” orchestras, and he maintains a strong U.S. presence this season. In the new year, he looks forward to playing Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini – a Trifonov specialty – in high-profile debut appearances with the National Symphony under Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC (March 13-15), and for his debuts with the San Francisco Symphony under Osmo Vänskä (Jan 30–Feb 1), the Detroit Symphony (Feb 13-15), and the Houston Symphony (Feb 28–March 2). It was on hearing Trifonov’s account of the Rhapsody that the San Diego Union-Tribune observed: “It was as if he was plugged into Rachmaninoff’s psyche. … His flawless technique was astonishing, yet every note was tied to some musical impulse.

For his upcoming Minnesota Orchestra debut (Feb 20-23), the pianist turns to another of Rachmaninoff’s orchestral masterpieces: the Second Piano Concerto. A late addition to his repertoire, the beloved concerto also featured in Trifonov’s recent first performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, at which he impressed the Los Angeles Times with his characteristic mix of “bombs-away fireworks and meticulous delicacy.”

Last February, the day before his triumphant main-stage Carnegie Hall recital debut – when, as the New York Times reported, the pianist’s “soulful artistry and virtuoso chops were in full evidence” – Trifonov signed an exclusive agreement with Deutsche Grammophon. As the first release of their new partnership, the label will issue a live recording of that performance, entitled Trifonov: The Carnegie Recital.

The U.S. album release on January 28 is timed to coincide with the pianist’s return to Carnegie Hall on February 6, with a program of Schumann, Ravel, Schoenberg, and Stravinsky that also serves as the vehicle for his Symphony Hall recital debut, presented by the Chicago Symphony (Feb 9). In addition to his solo and concerto engagements, Trifonov will also join his teacher, pianist Sergei Babayan, for a three-date U.S. duo recital tour (March 3-7).
