Deborah Voigt stars in Met’s “Ring” reprise worldwide

The breathtaking tones of Deborah Voigt’s Brünnhilde will be heard again at the Metropolitan Opera, with the company’s April 13-May 12 reprise of the bold new Robert Lepage production of Wagner’s Ring cycle. Moreover, opera lovers across the globe will thrill to what the New York Times has described as “the energy, feeling and character in her every phrase,” as the Met’s Ring is beamed to cinemas worldwide as part of the wildly popular Met Live in HD series, with encore screenings of the operas in the U.S. May 14-19. This will be the first time an entire Ring cycle has been shown on cinema screens. On May 7, as a prelude to the Ring in HD, stateside movie theaters will show Wagner’s Dream, a new documentary by Susan Froemke about the creation of the Met’s new staging.

New York magazine’s Justin Davidson was one of the critics left awe-struck by Voigt’s initial Met performances as Brünnhilde, writing that the soprano “sounds charged, clear and ferocious… She husbands her energies for much of the evening, then unleashes the character’s badass side.” In the New York Times, Anthony Tommasini pointed out how her voice “sliced through the orchestra and throbbed with intensity.” Olivia Giovetti, WQXR’s Operavore, stated that Voigt’s portrayal was “a striking, frankly beautiful transformation,” culminating in “emotional catharsis.” Voigt stars in a dream cast for the Ring that also boasts Bryn Terfel as Wotan and Jay Hunter Morris as Siegfried, along with Jonas Kaufmann, Eva-Maria Westbroek, and Stephanie Blythe. Chiming in with the praise for Voigt’s performances, the New York Daily News reported: “As Brünnhilde, the goddess downsized by love to mere mortal, Deborah Voigt was on fire … and not just when she sacrificed herself in an inferno. Her voice blazed with passion.”
Beyond the Met Ring, Voigt returns to host the Met Live in HD series on April 14, when La traviata is beamed to cinemas internationally. On May 16 at the Central Park Boathouse, the soprano is the star of New York City Opera’s Spring Gala: An Evening with Deborah Voigt. She also has high-profile concert engagements this spring and early summer: Voigt joins the Montreal Symphony Orchestra for a concert of arias by Beethoven, Wagner, and Strauss (May 22-23), and she will appear with the Minnesota Orchestra to sing more signature repertoire – the “Dance of the Seven Veils” and Final Scene from Strauss’s Salome (June 7-10). June and July see the singer embark on a major tour Down Under, and she gives a recital at Glimmerglass in August.
