Dover Quartet Celebrates Relaunch of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks with Special Performance at NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge (May 30)

“I’ll see you again in 25 years,” said Laura Palmer to Agent Dale Cooper in the final episode of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. This May, just over a quarter-century later, fans can hope to find that promise fulfilled, when the surreal cult TV series finally returns to the small screen. To celebrate the relaunch, on May 30 the Dover Quartet previews selections from Twin Peaks Fantasy – a new work-in-progress by Daniel Schlosberg that draws on Angelo Badalamenti’s original Grammy Award-winning score – as the centerpiece of a special performance at downtown New York City hotspot Le Poisson Rouge. Rounding out the all-contemporary program are quartet arrangements of Badalamenti’s own, haunting Snapshot from Prague and other excerpts from his atmospheric Twin Peaks score, together with two recent commissions for the Dovers that share something of its distinctive ambience: Pale Blue Dot, David Ludwig’s depiction of Earth as seen from deep space, and Plan & Elevation (The Grounds of Dumbarton Oaks) by Pulitzer Prize-winner Caroline Shaw.

When the original two seasons of Twin Peaks aired back in 1990-91, Angelo Badalamenti’s iconic score played a crucial part in their success. His music for the groundbreaking series was recognized with a Grammy Award and three Emmy nominations, while the subsequent soundtrack album went on to win gold status in 25 countries. Looking ahead to the Dovers’ performance, the composer comments:

“It’s always an honor to hear my music performed by artists in the classical realm. And it’s a particular thrill for me to have the Dover Quartet introduce a new arrangement of my music from Twin Peaks by Daniel Schlosberg. I’m very much looking forward to hearing their new Twin Peaks Fantasy and their performance of Snapshot from Prague. Given all the notable composers and artists involved, it looks to be a fantastic program.”

The Twin Peaks Fantasy is a work-in-progress by Brooklyn-based composer Daniel Schlosberg, whose honors include a Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and a Morton Gould Young Composer Award. An ardent Twin Peaks fan, Schlosberg took Badalamenti’s Twin Peaks music as the subject of his doctoral dissertation at Yale University. After collaborating with the Dover Quartet at Chamber Music Northwest, and discovering its members to be fellow lovers of the David Lynch show, he set about writing them a new musical kaleidoscope on its score. The Dovers look forward to giving the finished fantasy its world premiere performance at Chamber Music Northwest this summer.

The forthcoming sneak preview at Le Poisson Rouge is timed to follow the launch of Twin Peaks’ new, third season on Showtime on May 21. Dover Quartet cellist Camden Shaw explains:

“We simply can’t express how excited we are to be presenting this concert, revolving around the music of Twin Peaks, one week after the premiere of the eagerly awaited new season! We are all fans of the original show, but it was the fantastic composer and our good friend Dan Schlosberg whose passion for this project was so infectious that we simply had to make it a reality.

“The program will include string quartet arrangements of some of Angelo Badalamenti’s music from Twin Peaks, and two recent works that we feel expand upon the themes of the show itself – Dumbarton Oaks by Caroline Shaw is steeped in the majesty and beauty of nature on Earth, while David Ludwig’s Pale Blue Dot explores an extraterrestrial interaction – but the culmination of the project will be an exclusive, preview performance from a new work Daniel is composing, inspired by the music of Twin Peaks but with entirely original material! Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind concert!”

As dedicated to growing and enriching today’s quartet literature as they are to interpreting the classics, the Dovers regularly champion Plan & Elevation (The Grounds of Dumbarton Oaks) by Pulitzer Prize-winner Caroline Shaw, and Pale Blue Dot by David Ludwig, “a composer with something urgent to say” (Philadelphia Inquirer). About the Dover Quartet

Recently recognized with a string of honors that include the Cleveland Quartet Award, an inaugural Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award, and a 2017 Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Dover Quartet is fast becoming a major presence on the international scene. This season, after making its recording debut with the release of an all-Mozart album on the Cedille label, the quartet embarked on a pair of North American tours, first in company with double-bassist Edgar Meyer and then with mandolin virtuoso Avi Avital.
