Gramophone Magazine announces “World’s 10 Most Inspiring Orchestras”
Gramophone magazine
recently made headlines with their much discussed and debated poll that ranked
“The World’s 20 Greatest Orchestras.”
In the upcoming May issue of the magazine, they once again take a poll,
however, this time they focus on the “World’s 10 Most Inspiring Orchestras.” Instead of focusing strictly on music
making, Gramophone
Editor-in-Chief James Inverne explains that this list “recognizes orchestras
solely on the basis of their social activities.” To create this list, Gramophone consulted a “jury of “leading
instrumentalists, who after all spend their lives immersing themselves in the
activities of lots of different orchestras around the world.”
Heading up the list is the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, the
world’s first online collaborative orchestra. Gramophone
sites the YouTube Symphony Orchestra “for democratising classical music on a
global scale, making it truly all-inclusive.” The YouTube Symphony Orchestra is poised to make its debut
on Wednesday, April 15 at Carnegie Hall under the direction of the project’s
artistic advisor, Michael Tilson Thomas.
Included on that program will be a host of guest stars including Gil
Shaham, Measha Brueggergosman, Mason Bates and more. For tickets and information, visit CarnegieHall.org.
