Inon Barnatan Plays Repertoire from Messiaen to Mozart, Tours With San Francisco Symphony, Releases Duo CD in 2015-16

Following a busy summer, the fall sees pianist Inon Barnatan embarking on the second of his three seasons as the New York Philharmonic’s first Artist-in-Association – an appointment that involves performances in both subscription concerts and chamber performances, and acting as ambassador for the orchestra. He launches the season playing Beethoven with the orchestra and its music director, Alan Gilbert, in Ann Arbor.  Back in New York, he plays Mozart with the ensemble under Jaap van Zweden, and joins Gilbert and mezzo-soprano Susan Graham for a New Year’s Eve concert titled “La Vie Parisienne.” This season he also makes his Disney Hall debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17, and plays the Copland Piano Concerto with the San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas, first in San Francisco, and then on an East Coast tour that includes a stop at Carnegie Hall. In October, Barnatan releases a duo CD of Chopin and Rachmaninov sonatas with his longtime recital partner, cellist Alisa Weilerstein, followed by a duo recital tour in November and February that includes a stop at London’s Wigmore Hall, as well as a Cliburn Foundation concert in Fort Worth and a recital at Stanford University’s Bing Concert Hall.

Barnatan’s coming season is filled with wide-ranging repertoire representing a variety of periods. “A born Schubertian” (Gramophone), he features works by the composer on programs in Amsterdam; Paris; Oldenburg, Germany; and at New York’s 92nd Street Y; as well as in all-Schubert concerts for the Vancouver Recital Society and the Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth. After recording Ravel’s notoriously difficult Gaspard de la nuit on his Darknesse Visible disc, which scored a coveted place on the New York Times’s “Best of 2012” list, he brings the work to the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.  A rich assortment of pieces dot the rest of his 2015-2016 calendar:  Rachmaninov with the Minnesota Orchestra; Andrew Norman’s Suspend with the North Carolina Symphony; Ligeti’s Musica ricercata in solo recital; and Shostakovich at the New World Symphony Chamber Music series in Miami. Aaron Copland’s Piano Concerto plays an important role for Barnatan this season, as he performs it with the St. Louis Symphony and with the San Francisco Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas. Of special note is a high-profile performance of Messiaen’s chamber masterpiece, Quartet for the End of Time, featuring Alan Gilbert on violin and other musicians from the New York Philharmonic at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Temple of Dendur.

The Three B’s are also well-represented on the pianist’s schedule this season. Barnatan takes on Beethoven’s First Concerto with the New York Philharmonic; the Fifth (“Emperor”) Concerto with the San Antonio and North Carolina Symphonies; the Third with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony, both under Alan Gilbert; and the Fourth Concerto with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse. Both Bach and Brahms are on a program at the 92nd Street Y, and Barnatan performs Brahms’s First Concerto with the Calgary Philharmonic. Six Bach keyboard concertos fill his program with the Calidore String Quartet in Santa Monica.  As Barnatan notes about his season:

“I programmed such varied repertoire this season primarily because it is all fantastic music. However, it is about more than my own love of the music. It’s about the connections I find among these works and how each one affects my interpretation of the other. How I approach Bach and Beethoven can deeply impact how I approach works by Rachmaninov and Messiaen. This diversity is stimulating and enriching for me as both a performer and a listener.”
