Leif Ove Andsnes – Summer 2009

The
celebrated Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes launches his summer 2009 season at
the Risor Chamber Music Festival in Norway, where he will give multiple performances
including a special preview on June 24 of his multi-media “Pictures
Reframed”

collaboration with South African-born visual artist Robin Rhode.  “Pictures Reframed” centers around
Mussorgsky’s epic piano suite, Pictures at an Exhibition, and combines music, film, and
still imagery.  EMI Classics will
release the project on both DVD and CD in fall 2009 and the world premiere will
take place on November 13 (with a second performance on November 14) at New
York’s Lincoln Center, Alice Tully Hall.
These concerts will be followed by live performances in the United
States and throughout Europe during November and December.  StatoilHydro is the project’s
commissioning sponsor and New York’s Lincoln Center is the commissioning arts
institution.

The Risor
Chamber Music Festival was founded in 1991, and Andsnes is one of its two
artistic directors.  The theme of
this year’s festival is “Revolution,” andit will explore works by such revolutionary composers as
Beethoven, Shostakovich, Schoenberg, and Schumann.  The intimacy of the performing spaces, the beauty of the
setting – a small Norwegian fishing village – and the superb quality of the
music-making have made tickets for the festival some of the most sought after
in all of Europe.

Leif Ove
Andsnes heads to the United States in July, where he will begin a tour of
American music festivals.  At the Festival
del Sole
, in
California’s beautiful Napa Valley, Andsnes will perform both solo repertoire –
Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (July 23) and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with
Antonio Pappano conducting the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas (July
25).  Andsnes and Pappano work
together frequently and have made a number of award-winning recordings for EMI
Classics, with whom Andsnes records exclusively.

Soon after,
Andsnes heads back east, where he will open New York’s popular Mostly Mozart
Festival
on
Tuesday, July 28 with a performance of Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto.  Louis Langrée will conduct the Mostly
Mozart Festival Orchestra at this opening night gala performance, and Andsnes
will give a second performance with Langrée and the orchestra on July 29.

Beethoven’s
Piano Concerto No. 3 is also on the program for Andsnes’s performance on August
2 at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lennox, Massachusetts.  Thomas Dausgaard will conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Back in
Europe in August, Andsnes will headline the debut season of the Kronborg
Chamber Music Festival
in Copenhagen, Denmark.
This newly established festival is set in the beautiful surroundings of
the church of the world famous Kronborg Castle, reputedly the setting for
Shakespeare’s Hamlet, which lies north of Copenhagen.
