Leif Ove Andsnes’s “Beethoven Journey” begins this fall

The music of Ludwig van Beethoven will figure prominently in Leif Ove Andsnes’s 2011-12 season and beyond, with numerous concerto performances and recitals across Europe, North America, and Japan, along with his debut recording for Sony Classical. His North American concert appearances will feature Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Manfred Honeck (November 25, 27), the Montreal Symphony Orchestra with Roger Norrington (November 30 and December 1), and the Boston Symphony Orchestra directed by David Zinman (January 12-14, 17), followed by performances of the Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Herbert Blomstedt (January 19-21). In Europe, he will play Beethoven’s Third Concerto with Jirí Belohlávek and the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London and on tour in Spain, and the First Concerto with Andris Nelsons and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein. He will also play, and conduct from the piano, concerto performances with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. In May Andsnes will again play and conduct, with performances of Beethoven’s First and Third Concertos with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra on tour in Italy, Dresden, Prague and Bergen. The Prague concerts will be recorded live by Sony Classical and are the first part of a multi-year project entitled “Beethoven – A Journey, which will feature Andsnes playing and recording all five of Beethoven’s piano concertos.

In addition to his concerto engagements, Andsnes will embark on an eight-city recital tour across the U.S. in February, with concerts in Los Angeles (Feb 8 at Walt Disney Concert Hall); San Francisco (Feb 9); Morrow (Feb 11); Washington, DC (Feb 12); Savannah (Feb 13); New York City (Feb 15 at Carnegie Hall); Chapel Hill (Feb 17); and Chicago (Feb 19 at Symphony Center). The program, which he will also present on an extensive European tour in March and April, features works by Chopin, Debussy, Bartók, and Haydn. A spring recital tour featuring songs by Mahler and Shostakovich with baritone Matthias Goerne will bring Andsnes back to the States for performances in San Francisco, St. Paul, Kalamazoo, Detroit, and New York’s Carnegie Hall (April 23-May 1). In June Andsnes will serve as Music Director of the 2012 Ojai Music Festival in California.

A complete list of Leif Ove Andsnes’s 2011-12 season engagements can be found below.

Among the many highlights of Andsnes’s 2010-11 season were two residencies – with the Berlin Philharmonic and with his hometown orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic. He also toured Europe with Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and with Mariss Jansons and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, as well as performing recitals in Europe and America. Last fall, EMI Classics released a recording of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concertos Nos. 3 and 4 with Andsnes, Antonio Pappano and the London Symphony Orchestra; in the spring, Andsnes’s recording of Schumann’s complete Piano Trios with violinist Christian Tetzlaff and his sister, cellist Tanja Tetzlaff, was released on the same label. About the latter, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, “The best kinds of chamber music performances – and this superlative disc is among them – are the ones that combine a variety of different artistic strengths into a single complementary blend.”
