The Music Academy of the West’s 69th annual Summer School and Festival presents more than 200 concerts, recitals, and masterclasses – more than 80 of them free to the public – on its picturesque Miraflores campus and throughout California’s scenic Santa Barbara (June 13–Aug 6). Featuring 140 talented fellows and almost 70 outstanding faculty members, highlights include Matthew Aucoin conducting a new production of The Bartered Bride and the West Coast premiere of his own Second Nature; New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert leading Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony and five Philharmonic principals undertaking residencies through the orchestra’s Global Academy initiative; two community concerts headlined by Jean-Yves Thibaudet; recitals by Jeremy Denk, Thomas Hampson, Lynn Harrell, and Emmanuel Pahud; the launch of a new ChamberFest series; a special wellness program; and a star-studded Opening Night Gala to honor Voice Program Director Marilyn Horne, who also oversees the opera, judges the Song Competition, and gives multiple masterclasses and private lessons. John Williams calls Music Academy of the West “a beacon of light in our American musical life,” and it was in response to the Academy’s 2015 season that the Santa Barbara Independent concluded: “The era in which classical music is stereotyped as either irrevocably highbrow or irreversibly in decline has finally ended.” 2016 Summer Festival Subscriptions go on sale April 4, and single tickets are available for purchase starting April 30. For more information and to view the subscription brochure, visit musicacademy.org/subscribe. As Scott Reed, Music Academy President and CEO, noted,
“We are looking forward to a very special Summer Festival. We have 140 fellows joining us on full scholarship from 24 states and 11 countries, who are eager to study with our extraordinary faculty and guest artists. We plan to welcome even more new audiences this summer through our ongoing Community Access initiatives.”
Opening Night Gala honors Marilyn Horne
In anticipation of the 2016 Summer School and Festival, on June 4 the Academy presents its Opening Night Gala: a black-tie event comprising a red-carpet reception, a concert of operatic favorites, an al fresco dinner in the Miraflores courtyard, and the public unveiling of the newly renovated Main House, renamed for Music Academy Voice Program Director Marilyn Horne (’53), arguably “the most influential singer in American history” (Opera News). A stellar quartet of singers – soprano Simone Osborne (’08, ’09, ’11), one of the youngest winners of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions; Grammy and Tucker Award-winning mezzo Isabel Leonard (’05); tenor Ben Bliss (’12), who appears in the Met’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail this spring; and baritone Quinn Kelsey, winner of the Met’s Beverly Sills Award – will perform in Hahn Hall, with the support of faculty artist Warren Jones at the piano, and a special appearance by conductor and pianist Speranza Scappucci (’96). Chaired by Santa Barbara resident and local philanthropist Sharon Bradford, the gala directly benefits the Academy’s full-scholarship program. Academy President Reed explained,
“We are celebrating our iconic Voice Program Director, Marilyn Horne, in the best way possible, with music performed by artists she has impacted through her incredible passion for teaching and mentoring. It is our honor and privilege that she has been a leader here for nearly 20 years. The transformation of the Main House is our loving tribute to her great legacy.”
Independence Day weekend: Thibaudet plays Rhapsody in Blue
On Independence Day weekend, Mosher Guest Artist Jean-Yves Thibaudet – one of only two classical pianists to be inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame – headlines two special Academy Festival Orchestra Community Concerts at the historic Granada Theatre. Under the baton of Larry Rachleff, the French pianist’s “hard to beat” (BBC Music magazine) account of Gershwin’s jazzy Rhapsody in Blue forms the centerpiece of a patriotic program flanked by John Adams’s high-octane Short Ride in a Fast Machine and Dvořák’s stirring “New World” Symphony. As part of the Music Academy’s ongoing Community Access initiative, more than 2,000 tickets will be available at just $10, and young people aged 7–17 will be admitted free of charge.
Opera: The Bartered Bride and Second Nature
As Opera News observes, “The Music Academy of the West’s annual opera production has long been a reliable showcase for fine young vocalists.” With legendary mezzo Marilyn Horne in her 21st year at helm of the Academy’s Voice Program, Matthew Aucoin – “opera’s 25-year old hope” (New York Times) – as the 2016 Elaine F. Stepanek Foundation Opera Conductor, and performers chosen from among 593 applicants as part of the Voice Program’s competitive audition process, this impressive tradition looks set to continue.
On July 29 and 31, Aucoin leads fellows from the Voice Program and the Academy Festival Orchestra in a fully staged new production of Smetana’s masterwork, The Bartered Bride, at the Granada Theatre. Costume and set design is courtesy of Hewes Design Award nominee Charlie Corcoran, whose work previously graced the Academy’s staging of The Magic Flute. Returning to direct the production – his fifth at the Summer Festival – is David Paul, a faculty member of the Juilliard School and the Met’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. At last year’s festival, as Opera News reported, it was Paul’s treatment of Rossini’s Cenerentola that “achieved a new level of polish and sophistication.” The review continued:
“Perhaps the most striking aspect of the production was how fully and comfortably the young singers seemed to inhabit their roles, bringing a naturalness to their stage movements that is not always seen on the operatic stage. This is no doubt a tribute to both the talent of the cast and the skillful direction of David Paul.”
A comic opera steeped in Bohemian tradition, The Bartered Bride is beloved for its expansive melodies, lively dancing, and colorful circus. Horne explains:
“I have always loved The Bartered Bride, since it’s the opera in which I made my professional operatic debut in Los Angeles, in the role of Hata. The music is first-rate and gorgeous! It’s an entertaining piece, both poignant and funny. The story is delightful – it retains its charm nearly 150 years after it was written.”
Aucoin also looks forward to leading the West Coast premiere of his own eco-themed youth opera, Second Nature, on June 28, as part of the Festival Artists Series at the Lobero Theatre. Hailed as “a smarter, better way to hook the next generation on opera” (Chicago Tribune), Second Nature features six vocal fellows and an instrumental trio in an entertaining production with sets, costumes, and lighting. The dystopian fairytale takes place 105 years in the future, and sends a strong message about our relationship with our environment.
New York Philharmonic Visiting Artists: five principals in residence
Music Academy of the West is the first American partner in the New York Philharmonic’s Global Academy, and 2016 marks the third summer of their innovative four-year partnership. As detailed below, Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert – one of the Academy’s two 2016 Luria Foundation Artists in Residence – leads the Academy Festival Orchestra on July 16, and international conductor and former associate conductor of the New York Philharmonic Case Scaglione on July 9. The partnership also sees five Philharmonic musicians serve as guest faculty for a week each summer, collaborating with Academy faculty to offer masterclasses, chamber music coaching, private lessons, and lectures. This summer’s distinguished guest residents are Academy alumnus and New York Philharmonic Concertmaster Frank Huang (’98, ’99), Principal Bassist Timothy Cobb, Associate Principal Oboist Sherry Sylar, Principal Trombonist Joseph Alessi, and Principal Timpanist Markus Rhoten. The Lead Sponsors of the partnership are Linda and Michael Keston.
Mosher Guest Artists in Residence: Hampson, Harrell, Pahud, and Thibaudet
Generous support from the Samuel B. and Margaret C. Mosher Foundation once again enables the Music Academy to host four world-class guest artists at this year’s Summer Festival. The 2016 Mosher Guest Artists are baritone and “Distinguished Alumni Award Winner (’94)” Thomas Hampson (’78, ’79), cellist Lynn Harrell, flutist Emmanuel Pahud, and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, whose residencies feature public masterclasses, performances, and private interaction with Academy fellows. As described above, Thibaudet reprises his signature take on Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the Academy Festival Orchestra on July 2 and 3, while the remaining Mosher Guest Artists each give a recital in Hahn Hall. America’s foremost baritone and founder of the Hampsong Foundation, Hampson performs with faculty artist pianist Tamara Sanikidze (’05, ’06, ’07), on June 22; cello legend Harrell, whose extensive discography has been recognized with two Grammy Awards, with pianist Victor Asuncion on July 7; and Pahud, principal flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic and an eminent soloist, chamber musician, teacher, and new-music commissioner, with faculty artist pianist Jonathan Feldman on July 20.
Luria Foundation Artists in Residence: Jeremy Denk and Alan Gilbert
The Luria Foundation Artist in Residence program showcases artists who offer the fellows forward-thinking perspectives across all disciplines and areas of classical-music training. Now in its second season, the program honors two guest artists: pianist Jeremy Denk, winner of both a MacArthur “genius grant” and the Avery Fisher Prize, and New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert, whose honors include a 2015 Foreign Policy Association Medal for his commitment to cultural diplomacy. The residency sees Denk perform alongside Academy fellows in the Festival Artists Series on June 21, give a Hahn Hall recital titled “Medieval to Modern” on June 18, and teach solo piano masterclasses on June 13 and 20. Besides conducting the Academy Festival Orchestra, as detailed below, on July 16, Gilbert will offer teaching and coaching, and will give a chamber music masterclass on July 12.
Academy Festival Orchestra Concerts
The Academy Festival Orchestra presents five programs this season, all at the historic Granada Theatre in downtown Santa Barbara.
Larry Rachleff – music director of the Rhode Island Philharmonic and Rice University’s Shepherd School orchestras, and “a take-charge maestro who invests everything he conducts with deep musical understanding” (Chicago Tribune) – returns to conduct the first two programs of the season: a pairing of Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Respighi’s Pines of Rome (June 25), and the two Independence Day weekend Community Concerts, as detailed above (July 2 and 3).
Former associate conductor of the New York Philharmonic and Solti Conducting Award-winner Case Scaglione leads the Music Academy of the West Concerto Competition winners in strings, brass, winds, and percussion in a program of orchestral fireworks (July 9). In addition to Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, this includes a Wagner prelude and selected concerto excerpts.
Highlighting the Music Academy’s pioneering four-year partnership with the New York Philharmonic, the orchestra’s Music Director, Luria Foundation Artist in Residence Alan Gilbert, returns to lead Berg’s Three Pieces for Orchestra, an excerpt from Haydn’s oratorio The Creation, and Beethoven’s monumental “Eroica” Symphony (July 16). It was when Gilbert conducted the Academy Orchestra two years ago that the Los Angeles Times observed:
“That Gilbert can bring to budding orchestra players a stirring professionalism as well as a modicum of adventure was in full evidence. … The playing was vital, … expressive and downright gorgeous. … There was a sheen to the Academy sound that was reminiscent of the New York Philharmonic, and an irresistible playfulness.”
James Gaffigan, American-born chief conductor of Switzerland’s Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, makes regular guest appearances at the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Vienna State Opera. He takes the podium for the season’s final orchestral program (Aug 6), which juxtaposes Rimsky-Korsakov’s beloved Scheherazade and a piano concerto (TBA) with a recent work from Lutoslawski Award-winner Sean Shepherd, hailed as “an exciting composer of the new American generation” (New York Times).
New this season: ChamberFest
2016 marks the inaugural ChamberFest, a new addition to the Summer Festival. This sees fellows practicing chamber music with selected faculty over an intensive ten-day rehearsal period, culminating with a pair of chamber recitals in Hahn Hall to showcase the fruits of their collaboration. Faculty members violist Richard O’Neill (’98, ’99) and cellist David Geber perform with the fellows on July 27, and violist Karen Dreyfus and cellist Robert deMaine (’90) on July 28.
Chamber Music: Takács Quartet, Festival Artists Series, and Picnic Concert Series
The first string quartet to be inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame, the Takács Quartet once again oversees the Academy’s innovative String Quartet Seminar, which provides 16 string fellows with intensive ensemble coaching over the course of two weeks. The Takács also gives a Hahn Hall recital (June 13), oversees the ChamberFest rehearsal period, and takes part in the Festival Artists Series (July 19).
The Festival Artists Series presents Academy faculty, fellows, and guest artists in chamber concerts at the Lobero Theatre. Besides the West Coast premiere of Aucoin’s opera Second Nature (June 28), the 2016 series comprises a program of Brahms, Schumann, and Mozart (June 21), a Schubert piano trio (July 5), works by Bach and Handel (July 12), the Takács Quartet (July 19), a Shostakovich piano quintet (July 26), and a concert bringing together faculty artists and the resident New York Philharmonic principals (Aug 2).
The Picnic Concert Series, named for the tradition of pre-concert picnicking on the Academy’s Miraflores grounds, features Academy fellows in six eclectic chamber recitals, programmed by the musicians themselves. This season’s opening concert presents string quartets from the Academy’s String Quartet Seminar program. Seating for these popular events, which take place in Hahn Hall on June 17, July 1, 8, 15, 22, and August 5, is limited.
Community Access Initiatives
The Music Academy continues to expand its Community Access initiatives to foster greater community involvement during the 2016 Summer Festival. Anchoring the initiative are $10 Community Access tickets, available on a first-come, first-served basis for all Festival events from June 11. Community Access seats will be located in premium sections of each Summer Festival venue: Hahn Hall, Lehmann Hall, and Weinman Hall on the Music Academy campus, and the Lobero and Granada Theatres in downtown Santa Barbara. Additionally, young people aged 7-17 accompanied by ticketed adults will be granted free admission to all events. For those unable to attend in person, the Academy will livestream video of more than 25 performances and masterclasses on its website.
In addition, the Academy hosts a free, all-day Open House (June 14), featuring masterclasses by the Takács Quartet in chamber music, Mark H. Lawrence in trombone and tuba, Ted Atkatz in percussion, and Jorja Fleezanis in violin. Vice President of Artistic Planning and Educational Programs Patrick Posey will also offer a season preview, followed by a string quartet recital in Hahn Hall. Free tickets for the masterclasses and performance will be available from the ticket office on a first-come, first-served basis.
New this season, fellows will perform four Community Chamber Concerts at the Santa Barbara Public Library’s Faulkner Gallery, free of charge. These concerts will be held on Saturday afternoons on July 9, 16, 23, and 30.
Competitions: concertos and song
Academy fellows vie for the honor of performing with the Academy Festival Orchestra at the annual Concerto Celebration (July 9). This year’s Concerto Competition Finals will be held in Hahn Hall, where string, winds, brass, and percussion fellows compete on June 29, and piano fellows on July 14.
One of the most popular events of the summer season at the Music Academy, the Marilyn Horne Song Competition is a showcase for Academy singers and vocal pianists. They compete in Hahn Hall on August 4 for the Regina Roney cash prize of $3,000 each, recital engagements on both coasts, and career consultations with New York-based communications firm 21C Media Group. Past winners include such familiar faces at the Metropolitan Opera as Evan Hughes, Isabel Leonard, and Nadine Sierra.
Performance Psychology
Once again the Music Academy offers “The Path to Optimal Performance,” a series of workshops, lectures, and interactive coaching sessions designed to provide fellows with the opportunity to develop their performance skills in an experiential environment. Series leader Bill Williams is recognized internationally for his work as a musician, performance coach, and educator, having served as principal trumpet at the San Francisco Symphony and Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, among others, and having taught performance techniques at the New World Symphony, Juilliard School, Curtis Institute of Music, and DePaul University.
World and West Coast Premieres
The Academy and faculty artists alike are committed to the commissioning and exposure of new works. Through the Michael Steinberg and Jorja Fleezanis Fund Commissioning Project, faculty artist violinist Jorja Fleezanis gives the West Coast premiere of Justin Merritt’s Ithaka on July 19. Faculty artists Glenn Dicterow and Karen Dreyfus give the world premiere of Paul Chihara’s Duo Lyrico – written for them as a gift – at the Lobero Theatre in the Festival Artists Series on July 5. As detailed above, Matthew Aucoin leads the West Coast premiere of his opera Second Nature on June 28. Additional works by modern composers – John Adams, Casey Cangelosi, Gordon Langford, György Ligeti, Caroline Shaw, and Sean Shepherd among them – will be programmed throughout the festival season.
Masterclasses with Marilyn Horne, Jeremy Denk, Leon Fleisher and others
The masterclass is one of the hallmarks of the Music Academy experience. All fellows participate in the Music Academy’s extensive masterclass program, which is designed to complement individual private instruction. Over the course of the eight-week festival, more than 100 public masterclasses will be presented by faculty and guest artists in voice, solo piano, and instrumental series. Among those leading vocal masterclasses are Marilyn Horne, Thomas Hampson, Matthew Aucoin, and Martin Katz. Solo piano masterclasses will be led by Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Jerome Lowenthal, Conor Hanick, Leon Fleisher, Julian Martin, and Jeremy Denk, who also gives a recital on June 18. Weekly instrumental masterclasses are presented by faculty and visiting artists, including flutists Emmanuel Pahud, Timothy Day, and Jim Walker, horn player Julie Landsman, pianist Jonathan Feldman, violinists Kathleen Winkler and Glenn Dicterow, violists Cynthia Phelps (’79,’83) and Richard O’Neill (’98, ’99), cellists David Geber and Alan Stepansky, and percussionist Michael Werner (’90). All masterclasses are open to the public, offering a unique behind-the-scenes look at the musical teaching process at its most dynamic and intimate.
Wellness Program: “Live Well, Perform, Well”
The Academy takes a holistic approach to developing the next generation of classically trained musicians, believing that to perform well, one must first live well. In keeping with this philosophy, fellows are offered a comprehensive wellness training program, designed to help balance and prioritize their mental, physical and social wellbeing, all vital if they are to thrive personally and professionally in today’s demanding musical environment. In an exclusive partnership with the Santa Barbara-based Jenny Schatzle Program, fellows take part in weekly cardio, kickboxing, and yoga classes on the Westmont campus. They will also receive tools for nutrition, motivational seminars, and instructional videos.
The community can join the fellows on their wellness journey in a community yoga class to be announced, featuring live chamber music to enjoy during the workout performed by festival musicians.
Venues
The Music Academy of the West’s fellows, faculty and guest artists perform at its scenic ocean-side campus and in venues throughout Santa Barbara, including the historic 1,500-seat Granada Theatre and the recently renovated 600-seat Lobero Theatre. The Academy’s nine-acre campus of lush gardens, known as Miraflores, was originally the estate of John Percival Jefferson. Its spectacular grounds and gardens create a serene place for visitors to stroll and relax before performances taking place in the intimacy of Hahn Hall. The Los Angeles Times calls Hahn Hall the “centerpiece of the West Coast’s elite summer music academy, hidden away in a plush neighborhood of Montecito, a block from a glorious coastline. … With 350 seats, it is perfect for chamber music and recitals. The acoustics are unobtrusive; nothing gets between music and the ear.”
Lodging, dining and ticket information
