Music Academy of the West’s 71st Season: 200 Events in Eight Weeks on America’s Riviera This Summer (June 18–Aug 11)

The Music Academy of the West’s 71st annual Summer School and Festival presents 139 talented fellows and more than 70 outstanding faculty members in 200 concerts, recitals, and masterclasses on its picturesque Miraflores campus and throughout scenic Santa Barbara, California (June 18–Aug 11). Highlights include the launch of a major new four-year partnership with the London Symphony Orchestra that sees key LSO conductors and principals in residence this summer; the Academy Festival Orchestra and the Los Angeles Master Chorale in a special Community Concert of Mahler’s “Resurrection” Symphony under the leadership of Mosher Guest Artist Gustavo Dudamel, as a sign of the Academy’s continued commitment to community access; a Composer-in-Residence program featuring six composers and five premieres; four Academy Festival Orchestra concerts with Larry Rachleff, Stéphane Denève, and the LSO’s Elim Chan; a new production of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro that marks the festival debut of James Conlon; a new series of faculty artist recitals; recitals by Jeremy Denk, the Takács Quartet, Mosher Guest Artists David Fray and Simon Keenlyside, and others; and the return of the Academy’s Classical Evolution/Revolution Conference, introduced last season to shed light on challenges and innovation for 21st musicians and their audiences. London Symphony Orchestra: new four-year partnership

Following the success of its recent collaboration with the New York Philharmonic, Music Academy of the West is now embarking on a new four-year partnership with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), a world leader in its innovation, management, and international presence. LSO Conductor Laureate and New World Symphony Orchestra Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas, who looks forward to serving as Signature Festival Conductor of the partnership, will oversee its launch in a special panel discussion at the Academy, where six LSO musicians will be in residence this summer. The 2018 LSO Guest Artists, who appear as both teachers and performers, are Elim Chan, winner of the 2014 Donatella Flick LSO Conducting Competition (see AFO section below), LSO Principal Second Violin David Alberman, LSO Principal Cello Rebecca Gilliver, LSO Principal Clarinet Andrew Marriner, LSO Principal Trumpet David Elton, and LSO Principal Percussion Neil Percy.

Over the next three summers, Michael Tilson Thomas and other key LSO conductors and musicians will perform and teach at the Academy, with the full orchestra in residence during the 2019 and 2021 festivals. In addition, twelve Academy fellows will travel to London each winter for ten-day apprenticeships with Music Director Sir Simon Rattle and the orchestra in “Keston MAX,” the new Linda and Michael Keston Music Academy eXchange Program, and winners of the Academy’s annual Solo Piano and Marilyn Horne Song Competitions will be presented in recital at London’s LSO St Luke’s. Other partnership plans include multiple co-commissions by the Academy and the LSO, to include a new children’s opera for U.S. premiere at the 2021 festival.

Gustavo Dudamel leads Community Concert: Mahler’s “Resurrection”

When Santa Barbara suffered successive disasters this winter – a fire followed by a mudslide, the city’s worst catastrophe to date – the local response was prompt, effective, and heartwarming. To honor this achievement, the Academy presents a special Community Concert, at which trailblazing conductor Gustavo Dudamel – the music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar, and one of the four 2018 Mosher Guest Artists (see below) – will lead the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the Academy Festival Orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, the “Resurrection.” Music Academy of the West offers its community the symphony’s redemptive message of hope, as expressed by more than 200 musicians live at the Santa Barbara Bowl (Aug 11). For this epic festival finale, more than 4,000 tickets will be priced at just $10 each and all 7- to 17-year-olds will be admitted free with an adult (tickets required).

At last summer’s Community Concert, which celebrated the Academy’s 70th anniversary, Alan Gilbert made his final appearance as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. Their account of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony drew an audience of 7,500 and represents the largest classical music event in Santa Barbara history.

New music: Composers-in-Residence

The Academy’s Composer-in-Residence program supports no fewer than six incumbents: Guillaume Connesson, one of the most widely performed French composers worldwide; Timothy Higgins, whose commissions include the National Brass Ensemble and the brass sections of the San Francisco Symphony and Chicago Symphony; Hannah Lash, winner of an ASCAP-Morton Gould Young Composer Award; Elizabeth Ogonek, currently completing a three-year tenure as composer-in-residence at the Chicago Symphony; James Stephenson, “a composer of real talent” (Minnesota Star Tribune); and Caroline Shaw, the youngest laureate of the Pulitzer Prize for Music, whose residency marks the first time a composer has been one of the Academy’s Mosher Guest Artists (see below).

With the full involvement of the composers, the Composers-in-Residence program presents world premieres of chamber pieces by Higgins (July 10) and Lash (July 31), the American premieres of an orchestral composition by Connesson (July 14) and a piano quartet by Shaw (July 9), and the West Coast premieres of orchestral works by Shaw (July 7) and Ogonek (July 21). To help engage the next generation of young composers, Stephenson presents a family concert titled “Compose Yourself!” on July 23.

Academy Festival Orchestra concerts

The Academy Festival Orchestra presents four programs at the historic Granada Theatre in downtown Santa Barbara this season, three of which showcase new works in the Composers-in-Residence program. Larry Rachleff – music director of the Rhode Island Philharmonic and Rice University’s Shepherd School orchestras, and “a take-charge maestro who invests everything he conducts with deep musical understanding” (Chicago Tribune) – returns to conduct the first two programs of the season. The first combines Berlioz and de Falla with Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony (June 30) and the second couples Sibelius’s uplifting Fifth Symphony with the West Coast premiere of Lo, a new violin concerto by Mosher Guest Artist and Composer-in-Residence Caroline Shaw, with the composer herself as soloist (July 7). Next, Stéphane Denève, Music Director of the Brussels Philharmonic and Music Director Designate of the St. Louis Symphony, leads a French-themed “Bastille Day” program, pairing Debussy’s La mer, Gershwin’s An American in Paris, and Bernstein’s Overture to Candide with the American premiere of Les Trois Cités de Lovecraft by Composer-in-Residence Guillaume Connesson (July 14). Finally, LSO guest conductor Elim Chan takes the podium for a celebratory concert of works originally premiered by the LSO: two Edwardian masterpieces –The Planets by Holst and Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis by Vaughan Williams – and the West Coast premiere of Sleep and Unremembrance by Composer-in-Residence Elizabeth Ogonek, which was commissioned and premiered by the LSO in 2016 (July 21).

Festival Gala Concert

The Music Academy’s annual benefit concert, the Festival Gala, offers a celebration of distinguished alumni artists on August 4. Anchored by the Academy Chamber Orchestra under Nicholas McGegan, whom the New York Times calls “a constant source of life and sensuous color,” this year’s edition features alumni soprano Brenda Rae (’08), bass-baritone Brandon Cedel (’10, ’11), violinist Frank Huang (’98), violist Cynthia Phelps (’79, ’83), and pianist Micah McLaurin (’14, ’16) in a festive program of repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary. Guests will dine al fresco in the Academy’s gorgeous gardens before the concert in Hahn Hall, which the Santa Barbara Independent dubs an “ultra-luxurious jewel-box venue.” Proceeds from the gala benefit the Academy’s full-scholarship program.

Opera: new productions of Figaro and Trouble in Tahiti

As Opera News observes, “The Music Academy of the West’s annual opera production has long been a reliable showcase for fine young vocalists.” Once again starring the Academy’s vocal fellows under the auspices of legendary mezzo Marilyn Horne, Honorary Director of the Voice Program, this season’s operatic centerpiece is a new production of Mozart’s opera buffa The Marriage of Figaro from James Darrah, the Los Angeles-based director known for creating “once-in-a-lifetime experiences” (Opera News). With the Academy Festival Orchestra led by James Conlon, the Grammy Award-winning Music Director of Los Angeles Opera, in his eagerly anticipated festival debut, the fully staged and costumed production will take place at the historic Granada Theatre (Aug 3 & 5). By way of a preview, the fellows will perform the opera with piano accompaniment on July 21.

Darrah also serves as curator of the annual OperaFest, when the vocal fellows present an array of operatic vignettes in and around the gardens of the Miraflores campus. To celebrate this year’s Bernstein centennial, the evening will culminate with a fully staged new production of the American master composer’s jazz-infused one-act opera, Trouble in Tahiti, conducted by Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Music Director Edwin Outwater in Hahn Hall (June 30 & July 2). There will be two further opportunities to hear the Academy’s 2018 vocal fellows and vocal piano fellows, first at the Voice Program Opening Night recital (June 20) and then in An Evening of Vocal Music. A program of songs and arias by Wagner, Verdi, Richard Strauss, and Ben Moore, this is curated by beloved soprano Deborah Voigt, who looks forward to joining the fellows on stage for a special conclusion (July 12).

Mosher Guest Artists in Residence: Dudamel, Fray, Keenlyside and Shaw

Generous support from the Samuel B. and Margaret C. Mosher Foundation once again enables the Music Academy to host four world-class guest artists this year. The 2018 Mosher Guest Artists are Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, “one of the world’s most sought-after conductors” (New York Times), who is one of the few classical artists who have been named to the TIME 100 (see Dudamel section above); French pianist David Fray, a Bach specialist who has been recognized with the Echo Klassik “Instrumentalist of the Year” award; British baritone Simon Keenlyside, a renowned recitalist whose honors include Musical America’s “Vocalist of the Year” award; and the program’s composer-in-residence, Caroline Shaw. A former student of faculty artist Kathleen Winkler, Shaw is not only the youngest winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music, but also a member of the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth. Keenlyside and Fray will both give Hahn Hall recitals (July 25 and Aug 6) and public masterclasses, as well as interacting privately with Academy fellows. Besides performing the West Coast premiere of her violin concerto (see AFO section above), Shaw looks forward to curating a recital of her music at Hahn Hall (July 9).

There will also be solo piano recitals by returning faculty artists Jerome Lowenthal, former Piano Chair at the Juilliard School (June 19); Jeremy Denk, whose honors include a MacArthur “genius grant” Fellowship and the Avery Fisher Prize (July 5); and Conor Hanick, “a pianist who defies human description” (Concerto.net) (Aug 1).

Chamber Music: Takács Quartet, Festival Artists, Picnic Concerts, Community Concerts, more

As in previous years, the summer season offers a wealth of chamber concerts. The first string quartet to be inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame, the Takács Quartet once again performs the opening-night recital (June 18), besides playing Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence in the Festival Artists Series (July 24). Presenting faculty, fellows, and guest artists in chamber concerts at the Lobero Theatre, the series is also highlighted by accounts of Beethoven’s “Archduke” Trio (June 26), Mozart’s Serenade for Winds (July 3), and Bloch’s Piano Quintet (Aug 7). Great classics of the chamber literature meet new music from the Academy’s resident composers, when Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet is juxtaposed with Connesson’s Sextet and the world premiere of a new piece by Higgins (July 10); Brahms’s Piano Quartet is paired with Ogonek’s Lightenings, as interpreted by four of the 2018 LSO guest artists (July 17); and Strauss’s Piano Quartet shares the program with the world premiere of Lash’s new composition for harps, keyboards, and percussion (July 31).

This season, faculty artists have been invited to perform together in a series of sonata recitals, enabling fellows to hear the repertoire they are studying, as performed by their mentors. Featuring such star faculty members as Glenn Dicterow, former Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, and Alan Stepansky, former Principal Cellist of the Boston Pops, there will be three group faculty recitals on June 27, July 18, and July 23. The Picnic Concert Series, named for the tradition of pre-concert picnicking on the Academy’s Miraflores grounds, presents Academy fellows in eclectic chamber recitals, programmed by the musicians themselves. Seating for these popular events, which take place in Hahn Hall, is limited (June 22 & 29; July 6, 13, 20 & 27; Aug 8). Finally, as they did last season, fellows will perform four Community Chamber Concerts at the Santa Barbara Public Library’s Faulkner Gallery. Offered free of charge as a gift to the local community, these concerts will take place on Saturday afternoons (June 30; July 7 & 14; Aug 4).

Classical Evolution/Revolution Conference

June 22 brings the second Classical Evolution/Revolution Conference, building on the success of the first, which established the Music Academy as a pioneer of thought leadership in music and the arts. Engaging creators, thinkers, CEOs, and media leaders to consider the arts as the cultural fabric of society, this year’s edition addresses such topics as the increased pressures created by today’s political climate, unconventional career paths, cultural activism, broadening access to the arts in underserved communities, and overhauling the outdated gender dynamics that have allowed the world of culture to become rife with abuses of power. Guest speakers and panelists include Margo Drakos, the former cellist and tech entrepreneur who went on to found ArtistYear, which helps develop citizen-artists; Chad Smith, Chief Operating Officer for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and newly appointed Artistic Director of the Ojai Music Festival; Sarah Johnson, Director of the Weill Music Institute at New York’s Carnegie Hall; and Neda Ulaby, Arts Correspondent for National Public Radio. Winners of the Academy’s inaugural Alumni Enterprise Awards will also be in attendance.

Competitions and showcases

One of the most popular events of the summer season, the Marilyn Horne Song Competition (Aug 9) is a showcase for Academy singers and vocal pianists, who compete for the Regina Roney Award, a cash prize and international recital tour. Chosen by a jury led by Honorary Voice Program Director Marilyn Horne (’53), past winners include John Osborn (’97), Susanna Phillips (’02, ’03), Isabel Leonard (’05), and Nadine Sierra (’07). Likewise the Academy’s Solo Piano Competition (July 14) sees piano fellows compete for the Luria Foundation Award, a cash prize and international recital tour, which is presented in partnership with Steinway & Sons. At this year’s Concerto Competition (July 28), piano, string, wind, brass, and percussion fellows also vie for the honor of performing with the Academy Festival Orchestra next summer.

As in previous years, the fellows will be showcased throughout the summer in a series of special events. The eight solo piano fellows will be introduced in PianoFest (June 25) before taking their leave in the Solo Piano Finale (July 30). Collaborative piano and instrumental fellows will pair up for SonataFest, an all-sonata program overseen by faculty artist Jonathan Feldman (Aug 3). Members of the String Quartet Seminar will unveil their new ensembles and share their work in the String Quartet Recital (July 26). Under the baton of Mark H. Lawrence, the brass and percussion fellows will perform large and small ensemble works spanning multiple genres at BrassFest (June 28). Percussion fellows and faculty will demonstrate their virtuosity on an array of instruments in PercussionFest I (June 23), before joining forces with vocal fellows, a flute fellow, and special guest artist Colin Currie for an account of Steve Reich’s landmark work Drumming in PercussionFest II (Aug 2).

More than 130 public masterclasses

The masterclass is one of the hallmarks of the Music Academy experience. All fellows participate in the Music Academy’s extensive masterclass program, which is designed to complement individual private instruction. Over the course of the eight-week festival, more than 130 public masterclasses will be presented by faculty and guest artists in voice, solo piano, and instrumental series. Among those leading vocal masterclasses are Marilyn Horne, Deborah Voigt, James Darrah, James Conlon, and Mosher guest artist Simon Keenlyside. Solo piano masterclasses will be led by Jerome Lowenthal, Conor Hanick, Jeremy Denk, and Mosher guest artist David Fray. Other weekly instrumental masterclasses are presented by faculty and visiting artists, including flutists Timothy Day and Jim Walker; horn player Julie Landsman; collaborative pianist Jonathan Feldman; violinists Frank Huang, Jorja Fleezanis, Kathleen Winkler, and Glenn Dicterow; violists Cynthia Phelps (’79,’83) and Richard O’Neill (’98, ’99); cellists Carter Brey and Alan Stepansky; percussionist Michael Werner (’90); the LSO Guest Artists; and many more. All masterclasses are open to the public, offering a unique behind-the-scenes look at the musical teaching process at its most dynamic and intimate.

Venues

The Music Academy of the West’s fellows, faculty and guest artists perform at its scenic ocean-side campus and in venues throughout Santa Barbara, including the historic 1,500-seat Granada Theatre and the recently renovated 600-seat Lobero Theatre. Known as Miraflores, the Academy’s nine-acre campus was originally the estate of John Percival Jefferson. Its spectacular grounds and gardens create a serene place for visitors to stroll and relax before performances in the intimate Hahn Hall, which the Los Angeles Times calls the “centerpiece of the West Coast’s elite summer music academy, hidden away in a plush neighborhood of Montecito, a block from a glorious coastline. … With 350 seats, it is perfect for chamber music and recitals. The acoustics are unobtrusive; nothing gets between music and the ear.” Additional campus venues are Lehmann Hall, named for founder Lotte Lehmann, and Weinman Hall, a performance space decorated in Andalusian style, for masterclasses.
