Chanticleer’s Machaut presents music from two facets of the life of Guillaume de Machaut (c. 1300–77) that to modern sensibilities might seem incompatible. The Messe de Nostre Dame reflects the fact that he spent the last four decades or so of his long life as canon of Reims Cathedral, but as a 14th-century poet-composer sponsored by a series of noble patrons, he also produced a considerable amount of secular work in the courtly love tradition, like the chansons “Douce dame jolie” and “Riches d’amour,” among others recorded on the album. Machaut is also a unique representative of his time because his genius for self-promotion and attention to his own posterity ensured the survival of almost his entire oeuvre.
The Messe de Nostre Dame is a seminal work that is believed to be the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer. Before that time, composers wrote settings of individual Mass movements, but they were not meant to be performed together and lacked any overarching structure. The Messe de Nostre Dame was intended for liturgical use, so in practice the movements would have been scattered throughout the liturgy, but for the first time they show melodic, harmonic, and structural similarities, and Machaut grouped them together in his collected works. The Messe de Nostre Dame could therefore be considered the first large-scale work in the Western music canon.
Reviewing a previous concert performance of Machaut’s chansons, The New Yorker declared: “In Chanticleer’s dulcet rendition, voices brushed against one another like roses swaying in a breeze. Across some six and a half centuries, a composer held an audience spellbound.”

Trio Azura’s Storytellers is the first album in the Colburn Collection, a new partnership designed to be a powerful springboard for the next generation of musicians. Nearly a century separates the works on this album, yet Charles Ives, John Harbison, and Jennifer Higdon share a distinctly American spirit of curiosity and individuality. Their music questions, provokes, implies, jokes, challenges, and explores, always searching for new ways to tell a story. Their singular compositional voices are realized in these performances by Trio Azura, praised by Gramophone for their “intelligence and imagination” and “profound emotion.” Ensemble-in-Residence at Colburn, Trio Azura was named the winner of the 2025 Young Concert Artists (YCA) Susan Wadsworth International Auditions and the YCA’s first Ensemble-in-Residence, as well as being Grand Prize winner of the 2024 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.
Consisting of Canadian violinist Duncan McDougall, South Korean cellist Yejin Hong, and Chinese pianist Yanfeng (Tony) Bai, Trio Azura makes its debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall on October 18, before celebrating the new Colburn Collection partnership with a performance at Colburn’s Thayer Hall in Los Angeles on November 23.

To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Outhere Music launches Fuga Latina, a new series dedicated to honoring Latin American voices in all their richness and complexity, including Latin America’s composers, musicians, and creators; the region’s diverse traditions; and its creative dialogues with the wider world.
The series’ inaugural album, recorded live at the 2023 Festival PAAX GNP in Mexico’s Mayan Riviera, brings together three landmark concertos under the baton of conductor Alondra de la Parra, Artistic Director and Founder of the festival. Works by Paquito D’Rivera, Omar Massa, Yamandu Costa, and Sérgio Assad trace a sonic journey from the Caribbean to Argentina and Brazil, sometimes evoking African and Chinese traditions along the way. The composers perform as soloists alongside The Impossible Orchestra, imbuing these works with the spontaneity and energy of live performance.

The Viennese Classicism of Mozart and Haydn was later revisited by Prokofiev in Russia, Poulenc in France, and, most unexpectedly, Villa-Lobos in Brazil. Each composer reimagined the tradition through a lens shaped by his own heritage. Now, Brazilian conductor Simone Menezes leads the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien in a program recorded in the city where this tradition was born, bringing the music full circle through performances of Villa-Lobos’s “In Memory of Mozart” Sinfonietta, Prokofiev’s “Classical” Symphony, and Poulenc’s Sinfonietta.

Alexandria, 48 BC: Caesar lands in Egypt and is handed the severed head of his rival Pompey. What follows is a story of revenge and seduction; Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy at war for the throne, Pompey’s widow and son bent on vengeance, and Cleopatra winning Caesar by disguising herself as Virtue among the Muses. The English Concert and Harry Bicket continue their Handel series on Linn with this full, unabridged account of his opera Giulio Cesare, written in 1724 for the castrato Senesino and the soprano Cuzzoni, and rarely recorded complete. Christophe Dumaux sings the title role with Louise Alder as Cleopatra, heading a cast that also features Beth Taylor, Paula Murrihy, John Holiday, Morgan Pearse, Meili Li, and Thomas Chenhall. This recording is the culmination of an international tour that included a performance at New York’s Carnegie Hall, of which The New York Times wrote: ‘This ensemble sets a standard for Handel performance.”
