Timed to coincide with her 50th anniversary concerts at the 2026 Lucerne Festival, Anne-Sophie Mutter’s American Tunes #1 marks the second volume in her “ASM Forte Forward” series on Alpha Classics. On the new album, she performs works by two composers close to her heart. The first is André Previn (1929–2019), to whom the violinist was married for several years, and with whom she remained close friends until his death. As a jazz pianist, conductor, and composer, Previn was a great and multifaceted talent who opened up new musical worlds for her. Here she presents his Piano Trio (2009) and Second Violin Concerto (2010), a work scored for solo violin, string orchestra, and harpsichord in a nod to Baroque music and to an instrument unusual in contemporary music. Another instrument featured outside its more familiar context is the double bass: Mutter asked Sebastian Currier to write a duo for her and double bassist Roman Patkoló, one of the scholarship recipients of her foundation. For this commission Currier wrote Ringtone Variations. He explains:

“I wanted to work with material that is very simple and familiar to everyone. This is the only piece where, if a phone went off in the audience, suddenly you have a new variation!”

The “ASM Forte Forward” series marks a new chapter in Mutter’s career: for the first time, she is producing the recordings herself. The first single – Likoo, for violin solo by Iranian-Dutch composer Aftab Darvishi – was released on January 23, ahead of the first album – East Meets West, which also featured works by Unsuk Chin, Jörg Widmann, and Thomas Adès – on March 27. Recommending the album, The New York Times noted:

“Many instrumentalists who have been active for a half-century would be inclined to stick to the familiar. The violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, by contrast, continues to bring forth and champion new works — like the four on this intriguing album, which are among dozens she has commissioned and premiered over the decades.”

Arthur Foote: The Complete Cello Works

Grammy-nominated cellist Julian Schwarz makes his Delos label debut with the complete cello works of Arthur Foote, including the world premiere commercial recording of the composer’s sole Cello Concerto. As the only member of the Boston Six to have been entirely trained in the United States, Foote may be considered the United States’ first homegrown talent. Albeit largely and undeservedly unperformed and undercelebrated, the composer’s refined sense of melody and lush harmonic language are bewitching. His wealth of music for cello and piano is performed here by Schwarz and his wife, Grammy-winning Marika Bournaki, while the concerto features the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Gerard Schwarz, the first American chosen as Musical America’s Conductor of the Year.

Channel Classics releases Mozart’s Don Giovanni in a new recording from Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. This was captured live in October 2025 at the spectacular Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, Italy, where the dream duo of André Schuen’s Don Giovanni and Luca Pisaroni’s Leporello headed a first-rate cast. Fischer explains:

“In a nutshell the first two bars of this opera describe the story: the fight between order and rebellion. The basses repeat their constant bottom note three times, finally overpowering the revolutionary syncopations of the violins. The energetic, defiant violin notes represent Don Giovanni, the man, who doesn’t accept any rules, who doesn’t know limits. He follows his own instincts, uses and misuses his power, his wealth, his servant, to follow one goal only: his passion. On this journey he kills, he hurts, damages others, without any remorse or even second thoughts. He is perfectly free, happy, liberated from inner doubts and outer control, from all the regulations of what we call morality.”

The recording represents the first volume of a new Mozart opera trilogy from Fischer and the ensemble, with recordings of The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro to follow in years to come.
