Q2 Music presents Brooklyn Philharmonic and Mos Def (Oct 12)

On Wednesday, October 12 at 7pm, Q2 Music the online contemporary classical stream of Classical 105.9FM WQXR – will present an audio webcast of the Brooklyn Philharmonic with new Music Director Alan Pierson and special guest artist Mos Def, live from the World Financial Center Winter Garden. The concert will mark the beginning of the new season of WNYC’s “New Sounds Live” and will feature a preview of the Brooklyn Philharmonic’s upcoming season. Curated by John Schaefer, host and producer of WNYC’s popular shows New Sounds and Soundcheck, “New Sound Live” presents adventurous New York concerts of top artists exploring new music and composers.

An acclaimed musician, actor, and social activist, Brooklyn-born Mos Def and the Brooklyn Philharmonic are two of Kings County’s favorite cultural icons. The October 12 concert sees Mos Def join the orchestra to perform his original songs, in new arrangements by Grammy Award-winning composer Derek Bermel. The evening also features performances by chamber players from the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, plus the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, soprano Mellissa Hughes, celebrated singer-songwriter Corey Dargel, and others. The concert will showcase an excerpt from a new composition by David T. Little based on 19th-century shape note singing, as well as works by Lev Zhurbin (aka Ljova) and Frederic Rzewski.

The live audio webcast will be available at www.wqxr.org/q2music and on WQXR’s iPhone mobile app. For additional coverage of the “New Sounds Live” season opener with the Brooklyn Philharmonic and special guest Mos Def, visit www.wqxr.org/ – /articles/q2-live-concerts/2011/oct/06/l.
