Sherrill Milnes Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Met Debut as Honoree of Guild Luncheon (Nov 13); Gives National Opera Center Masterclass (Nov 14)

December 22 marks the 50th anniversary of Sherrill Milnes’s first appearance at the Metropolitan Opera, where he made his house debut as Valentin in Faust in 1965. To celebrate this milestone, Milnes – the definitive Verdi baritone of his generation – looks forward to a pair of back-to-back events in New York. First, on November 13, the 81st Annual Metropolitan Opera Guild Luncheon, “Golden Celebration,” honors the three-time Grammy Award-winner at the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria alongside his fellow Met legends Grace Bumbry, Mirella Freni, and Renata Scotto, all of whom also celebrate the golden anniversaries of their Met debuts this year. Then next day on November 14, Milnes gives a masterclass to young singers from his acclaimed Sherrill Milnes VOICE Programs at the National Opera Center, followed by a reception at the Hilton Garden Inn. Fall also sees the American baritone serve on the Artists Committee of the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, DC (Dec 6), and – as Vice President and Chairman of the Audition and Awards Committee of the Richard Tucker Music Foundation – receive recognition at Lincoln Center’s 2015 Richard Tucker Gala (Nov 1).

Milnes, who celebrated his 80th birthday in January, continues to make invaluable contributions to opera, providing extensive education and mentoring to the next generation through his VOICExperience Foundation and annual Savannah VOICE Festival. The two programs recently joined forces for one of their most ambitious ventures to date, when they commissioned a new opera from Hawaiian-born composer Michael Ching. A musical journey through Savannah’s history by way of one of her most famous ghosts, Alice Ryley: A Savannah Ghost Opera – with Milnes himself in a specially-written speaking role – receives its world premiere performances on the eve of Halloween, this Friday, October 30, at Savannah’s historic Charles H. Morris Center. Click here to livestream the dress rehearsal today at noon.
