The Knights Branch Out with Gil Shaham and Yo-Yo Ma, and Nurture Local Roots with Brooklyn Residency in 2015-16

The Knights’ adventurous spirit and dedication to transforming the concert experience set the course for this innovative orchestral collective. They launch the 2015-16 season at the breathtakingly beautiful Caramoor estate, with an eclectic program of Mendelssohn, Sollima, and Golijov that features Yo-Yo Ma. With the support of a generous Mellon Foundation grant, The Knights undertake their annual NYC residency this season at BRIC, performing a program of works spanning the past 100 years in the fall and collaborating with Gil Shaham in the spring, both at BRIC House. Their residency at the Brooklyn arts center also includes outreach activities with local schools. In February, Shaham and The Knights embark on a North American tour, performing Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto in Baltimore, Toronto, Chicago, Atlanta, and Chapel Hill. The tour celebrates the February release of Shaham’s Violin Concertos of the 1930s, Vol. 2, on which their account of the concerto can be heard.

As Colin Jacobsen, The Knights’ Co-Founder and Artistic Director, explains:

“We’re thrilled to be kicking off the season at Caramoor with our mentor, friend and one of the great musicians and arts advocates of our time, Yo-Yo Ma. He will be playing Osvaldo Golijov’s Azul, which was written for him and seeks to look at our home planet Earth from multiple musical perspectives: from above, as a beautiful floating blue orb, and on the ground in the midst of the turbulent human experience. We are looking at The Knights’ ’15-16 season as a way of highlighting two different aspects of our orchestra. We’re setting more local roots down with our residencies at BRIC in Brooklyn, NY as well as touring North America with another great musician, Gil Shaham. Our rep will range from Mendelssohn to Stravinsky to Caroline Shaw, Nico Muhly, and work created collaboratively by members of The Knights.”
