Thomas Hampson tours with “Song of America” & sings in Pittsburgh

After his successful first-time collaboration with Gustavo Dudamel at the Los Angeles Philharmonic earlier this month, baritone Thomas Hampson takes to the road with a recital program based on his “Song of America” project, featuring music by American composers including Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, and Charles Ives. Accompanied by pianists Vlad Iftinca and Warren Jones, Hampson sings at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Jan 22), and in Clinton, MS (Jan 24), Nashville, TN (Jan 26), and Sarasota, FL (Jan 30). He then teams up with Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for Brahms’s A German Requiem and Dvorák’s Biblical Songs (Feb 3–5).
A central component of the “Song of America” project is a 13-part radio series that began airing on radio stations all over the country – from Los Angeles (KUSC 91.5 FM) to Houston (KUHA 91.7 FM) and Boston (WCRB 99.5 FM) – in fall 2011. This year sees the program being picked up by many other stations, including WQXR 105.9 FM in New York, which broadcasts the programs on Sundays at 9pm. The series, which was produced by the WFMT Radio Network of Chicago and made possible by the Hampsong Foundation and the Peter Jay Sharp Foundation, will also be offered to members of the European Broadcasting Union and to stations in other countries around the world. A list of the 217 stations and translators participating thus far is available at, which also houses various online resources to complement the 13 programs.
