Trinity Church Wall Street Announces Return of Bach + One in St. Paul’s Chapel, Pärt Performances at The Shed at Hudson Yards, and “Alchemy Series” with New York Baroque Incorporated

Trinity Church Wall Street’s beloved Bach at One series—lauded by the New York Times for its “dramatic vigor”—resumes April 1. Now rechristened Bach + One, each performance in the midday concert series in St. Paul’s Chapel comprises a Bach cantata along with a complementary work by one of Bach’s contemporaries. Trinity’s music program also has an increased presence in the broader community this season. To celebrate the opening of the architecturally spectacular, innovative new venue The Shed at Hudson Yards, The Choir of Trinity Wall Street gives two months of live performances in the exhibit Reich Richter Pärt (April 6-June 2). Back in St. Paul’s Chapel, early music ensemble New York Baroque Incorporated (NYBI) presents the “Alchemy Series”: four programs on the themes Water, Air, Earth and Fire (April 4, 25; May 2, 22). Spring programming also includes weekly improvised Compline services and Pipes at One concerts, the latter of which features a variety of guest organists, plus Trinity’s own Director of Music Julian Wachner and Associate Organists Avi Stein and Janet Yieh, as well as organ students from throughout the U.S. and Canada on the first Friday of each month. Additional concerts feature the Trinity Youth Chorus and Trinity’s semi-professional adult choir, Downtown Voices. Many of Trinity’s “indispensable and unmissable” (New York Times) concert offerings are professionally filmed, streamed live and available on demand at trinitywallstreet.org.

After the recent completion of a five-year survey of Bach cantatas by The Choir of Trinity Wall Street and The Trinity Baroque Orchestra, led by Wachner, the new Bach + One series goes back to the beginning. The cantatas are presented one at a time in catalogue order, and this spring will be paired with a variety of concerti grossi and solo concertos by Johann David Heinichen, George Frideric Handel, Johann Friedrich Fasch and Georg Philipp Telemann, each of whom has a connection to Bach. Heinichen was a music teacher for one of Bach’s important patrons, and his own musical studies were at the Thomasschule in Leipzig, where Bach became Cantor in 1723. Handel and Bach never met, but Bach famously tried and failed to find his famous contemporary in Halle in 1719. When the Thomasschule post opened up, Bach’s esteemed colleague Fasch was invited to apply, but chose to withdraw his name before Bach was hired. And Telemann and Bach became close friends in Leipzig; the slightly older composer was godfather and namesake to Bach’s son Carl Philipp Emanuel.

Under the direction of Julian Wachner, The Choir of Trinity Wall Street performs Arvo Pärt’s Drei Hirtenkinder aus Fátima—composed as a response to the paintings of Gerhard Richter—as part of the Reich Richter Pärt exhibit during the inaugural season of Manhattan’s much-anticipated new venue, The Shed at Hudson Yards. This world premiere event includes two immersive performances—one conceived by composer Steve Reich and painter Gerhard Richter, the other by Richter and composer Arvo Pärt—exploring the shared sensory language of visual art and music. Other participants in Reich Richter Pärt are filmmaker Corinna Belz, Ensemble Signal, the International Contemporary Ensemble, and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. More information is available here.

New York Baroque Incorporated, a conductorless ensemble headed by Artistic and Executive Director Wen Yang, brings its four-concert “Alchemy Series” to St. Paul’s Chapel this spring, with soprano Teresa Wakim and bass Dashon Burton as guest artists. Praised by the New York Times as “truly excellent,” and “studded with stars in the making,” the ensemble performs a pan-European selection of works themed to the classical elements: Water, Air, Earth and Fire. More information is available here.

Trinity now offers Pipes at One concerts year-round in St. Paul’s Chapel, featuring the celebrated three-manual Noack organ that was inaugurated in the spring of 2018. These innovative programs showcase leading organists and rising stars from around the country. In 2019, on the first Friday of each month, Pipes at One will feature varied organ programs played by undergraduate and graduate students from the top music conservatories in North America.

Downtown Voices and conductor Stephen Sands perform twice this spring, with the first concert featuring Dvořák’s rarely performed Mass in D, in its original setting for organ and mixed choir, along with Britten’s Hymn to St. Cecilia and another rarity, Janáček’s Otče náš (Our Father) (April 28). To close out the season, the group is joined by resident contemporary ensemble NOVUS NY for a presentation of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, which the composer described as a “celebration of the triumph of the human spirit.” Completing the program is Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, a work requiring two pianists and two percussionists that has become one of Bartók’s most frequently performed compositions (June 16).

Each Sunday, the choirs of Trinity Wall Street lead a wonderfully varied repertoire at services that speak to the diversity of New York City. On Sunday evenings at 8pm in St. Paul’s Chapel, The Choir of Trinity Wall Street offers an intimate Compline by Candlelight featuring chant, improvisation, and newly composed sacred works. On two occasions this spring, Chorister Compline services will feature the Trinity Youth Chorus, which also performs a concert highlighting Britten’s Friday Afternoons (May 10). You can listen to podcasts of past Compline services here or you can download them for free from iTunes or listen on Spotify. Each podcast is approximately 30 minutes long.
