Trinity Wall Street’s 2013-14 season ranges from Bach to Britten and beyond

  • Renowned for what the New York Times has called its “transcendent” and “moving” performances, Trinity Wall Street will range from Bach and Britten to high-profile tour of Handel and much more during its 2013-14 season. Along with a September to January festival celebrating this year’s centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth, the Trinity ensembles will inaugurate collaborations with such institutions as Gotham Chamber Opera, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Carnegie Hall, the New York Philharmonic, Bang on a Can All-Stars, and The Juilliard School. The Choir of Trinity Wall Street and the Trinity Baroque Orchestra under music director Julian Wachner, who last year were nominated for a GRAMMY Award for their recording of Handel’s Israel in Egypt, will perform another great work by Handel, Messiah, at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. The hall will also be the venue for a collaboration between The Choir of Trinity Wall Street and Juilliard’s period instrument ensemble, Juilliard 415, for Bach’s St. Matthew Passion under Gary Thor Wedow, and the choir also returns to Lincoln Center for two concerts in the New York Philharmonic’s upcoming Biennial this spring.
  •
  • The Choir will also tour across the U.S. in 2014 – including a stop at Carnegie Hall – to perform Handel’s oratorio Theodora with acclaimed period-instrument orchestra the English Concert under Harry Bicket, with further performances in Mexico City, Birmingham, London and Paris. Trinity Wall Street is now more than just an “indispensable” destination point for music lovers in New York – its ensembles have become recognized as world class, and are increasingly in demand to collaborate with top presenters and artists from around the globe. Showing its cultural reach this season, the Trinity recording of Handel’s Israel in Egypt led by Wachner was nominated for a Grammy Award – and the Choir even sang “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” with the Rolling Stones as a highlight of the band’s 50th anniversary concerts at Prudential Center in New Jersey and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Branching out in another direction next season, Wachner will lead a performance of 21st-century vocal music at BAM’s Next Wave Festival in November, and the Trinity ensembles will collaborate with Gotham Chamber Opera to present Charpentier’s Orphée during Trinity’s Twelfth Night Festival. Trinity also begins a new music series for the Lenten season in 2014, titled Lamentatio, which juxtaposes Renaissance and Baroque music with contemporary works. And, as ever, Trinity Wall Street will host some of New York City’s most popular free concert series throughout next season: Bach at One, Concerts at One, and Pipes at One.
  •
  • One of the oldest, largest and most vibrant of all Episcopal parishes, Trinity Wall Street is located in the heart of Manhattan’s Financial District, where it has created a dynamic home for great music. Serving as director of Trinity’s Music and the Arts Program – as well as principal conductor of The Choir of Trinity Wall Street, period-instrument Trinity Baroque Orchestra, and contemporary-music ensemble-in-residence Novus NY – Julian Wachner also oversees all liturgical, professional and community Music and Arts programming at Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Chapel. The music at Trinity ranges from large-scale oratorios to chamber music, from intimate a cappella singing to jazz improvisation. All concerts at Trinity Wall Street are professionally filmed and Webcast live at www.trinitywallstreet.org.

  • Concerts at One
  •
  • Concerts at One, Trinity Wall Street’s long-running series of free concerts on Thursday afternoons, will mark the centennial of Benjamin Britten (1913-76) with a four-month festival exploring the great British composer’s vocal, orchestral and chamber works. Celebrating Britten – running from Sep 5 to Jan 5 – will feature performances by The Choir of Trinity Wall Street, Trinity Youth Chorus and Novus NY (led by Julian Wachner), as well as by such guest artists as tenor Nicholas Phan, chamber group Decoda, the JACK Quartet, and the piano duo of Grace Cho & Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez. Many of the concerts will present Britten’s work alongside that of such contemporaries as Berg, Gershwin, Rachmaninoff and Poulenc. Star cellist Matt Haimovitz will perform two recitals as part of the festival, on Oct 17 and Nov 21, contextualizing two of Britten’s suites for solo cello with solo works by Ligeti, John Tavener and Jennifer Higdon, among others. In addition to the Celebrating Britten events as part of Concerts at One, there will be special Britten festival concerts on Nov 18 (The Choir of Trinity Wall Street in Britten’s Sacred and Profane and other choral works) and Dec 9 (cellist Elinor Frey in Bach and Britten, on both Baroque and modern cello). The final Celebrating Britten concert, on Jan 5, will be part of Trinity’s Twelfth Night Festival, with the several ensembles of Trinity Wall Street performing Britten’s St. Nicholas and A Boy Was Born.
  •
  • Bach at One
  •
  • Trinity’s Bach at One series, beginning on Oct 14, sees The Choir of Trinity Wall Street and Trinity Baroque Orchestra continue their presentation of Bach’s complete cantata output. The New York Times has praised the “dramatic vigor” of Bach performances by the Trinity forces, not to mention “the buoyant, elegantly shaped orchestral sound” and “the lithe, immaculate and colorful singing of the chorus.” Along with performing the Bach cantatas featured in the Bach at One series, The Choir of Trinity Wall Street will also join the Juilliard 415 ensemble to perform Bach’s St. Matthew Passion at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on March 17, 2014.
  •
  • Messiah
  •
  • The New York Times has given Trinity Wall Street’s annual performances of Handel’s Messiah the highest acclaim. “But to experience the full, formidable range of Messiah … let Trinity be your guide,” said one review, while another added that while other groups present Messiah as “a comfortable holiday tradition, Trinity put on something closer to a sacred rite.” Next season’s Messiah performances will take place at Trinity Church on December 7 and 8, and then head uptown for a return to Alice Tully Hall on December 18.
  •
  • Twelfth Night Festival
  •
  • The Twelfth Night Festival – New York’s Winter Early Music Festival – runs from Dec 26 to Jan 6. Festival highlights include The Choir of Trinity Wall Street and Trinity Baroque Orchestra under Julian Wachner in seasonal Bach cantatas, and the Trinity Youth Chorus in such Christmas-themed works by Britten as St. Nicholas, along with special guest performances: Gotham Early Music Scene will present the medieval Play of Daniel, Dec 27-29. The Clarion Music Society will perform Rachmaninoff’s Vespers, Dec 31-Jan 1. And in a groundbreaking collaboration, Gotham Chamber Opera will join forces with The Choir of Trinity Wall Street and Trinity Baroque Orchestra to perform Charpentier’s Orphée (Jan 1, 3, 5).
  •
  • Touring Handel’s Theodora
  •
  • The Choir of Trinity Wall Street will pair on a globe-trotting tour of Handel’s Theodora with the ever-excellent period-instrument orchestra the English Concert led by Harry Bicket, the Grammy-nominated conductor who has performed Baroque works from the Glyndebourne Festival and Royal Albert Hall to the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall. The tour of Handel’s late-period triumph – which the composer ranked as the favorite among his many English-language biblical oratorios – starts Jan 25 in Sonoma County, CA before moving on to Orange County, CA (Jan 27); Chapel Hill, NC (Jan 30) and New York (Carnegie Hall, Feb 2); then across the Atlantic to Birmingham, England (Feb 6); London (the Barbican, Feb 8); and Paris (Feb 10).
  •
  • Compline by Candlelight
  •
  • Compline at Candlelight begins on September 8 and will be offered continuously throughout the year on Sunday evenings in the candlelit beauty of St. Paul’s Chapel. The Choir of Trinity Wall Street improvises the liturgy and performs contemporary and 20th-century works, with Britten being the focus for the first four months of the season, contributing to the extensive Celebrating Britten festival. Works to be featured during these performances include Hymn to St. Peter, Venite exultemus Domino, and excerpts from the composer’s Sacred and Profane and Ad majorem Dei gloriam (A.M.D.G).
  •
  • Lamentatio
  •
  • From March 9 to April 13, Trinity presents six performances of great music by composers of the early Renaissance juxtaposed with music by composers writing in the last 100 years. Led by Julian Wachner, The Choir of Trinity Wall Street presents such choral masterworks as Thomas Tallis’s Lamentations of Jeremiah and William Byrd’s Mass for Five Voices coupled with new works by the likes of David Lang, Pawel Lukaszewski and Joby Talbot, and culminating in the North American premiere of Gabriel Jackson’s Passio.
  •
  • Bach’s St. John Passion
  •
  • Trinity’s expertise with the music of Bach will be specially showcased this spring when the forces of Trinity Wall Street come together under Julian Wachner to perform Bach’s epochal St. John Passion on April 18. The New York Times has praised the “dramatic vigor” of Bach performances by the Trinity ensembles, not to mention “the buoyant, elegantly shaped orchestral sound” and “the lithe, immaculate and colorful singing of the chorus.”
