Mozart: Requiem, Fazıl Say: Mozart & Mevlana Op.110
Fatma Said, soprano; Marianne Crebassa, mezzo-soprano; Pene Pati, tenor; Alexandros Stavrakakis, bass Rundfunkchor Berlin, Luzerner Sinfonieorchester / Michael Sanderling
CD / LP / digital
Release date: Oct 3
This new recording of Mozart’s Requiem – with a lineup that includes Fatma Said, Marianne Crebassa, Pene Pati, and Alexandros Stavrakakis, the Rundfunkchor Berlin, the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester and conductor Michael Sanderling – is paired with the world-premiere recording of Mozart ve Mevlana by Turkish pianist-composer Fazıl Say. Using the same forces as the Mozart Requiem, this new work is set to the text of two poems by the 13th-century Sufi poet Rumi, translated into Turkish from the original Persian. Say’s composition combines musical references to Mozart’s works (including the Requiem) with instruments, meters, and harmonies from Anatolian culture, whereby Say hoped to “unite East and West in love and friendship through texts from the great philosopher Mevlana and quotations from the music of a composer of genius like Mozart in a fluid musical space.”

Gelosia!
Philippe Jaroussky, countertenor
Artaserse
CD / digital
Release date: Oct 24
Philippe Jaroussky’s Gelosia! celebrates the cantata da camera (secular cantata), a popular genre from the 18th century. As well as the world premiere recordings of two works set to Pietro Metastasio’s Gelosia text – composed by Nicola Porpora (1686-1768) and Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785) respectively – the album features music by Vivaldi, Handel, and Alessandro Scarlatti.
Jaroussky made a conscious decision to focus on cantatas written for a string accompaniment. He explains: “Cantatas of this kind often served as a laboratory for new ideas and, I believe, as a kind of personal diary for composers. Being away from opera, with its more academic demands, they could write as they wanted, completely free to express their feelings.”
The album comes as Jaroussky celebrates both the 25th year of his career and the 10th anniversary of the foundation of the Jaroussky Academy.
