Uyaras, the new album from male soprano Bruno de Sá, takes its name from the sirens and mermaids found in indigenous Brazilian folklore. In homage to de Sá’s home country, the recording features Brazilian classical music from Heitor Villa-Lobos (Bachianas Brasileiras) and Alberto Nepomuceno (As Uyaras). The rest of the program includes Romantic repertoire, wordless vocalises, and Latin American masterworks, from composers including Joseph Strauss, Camille Saint-Saëns, Joseph Canteloube, Maurice Ravel, Enrique Granados, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Heinrich Proch, and George Gershwin.

The Pyramids Recital captures Egyptian soprano Fatma Said singing before the majestic backdrop of the pyramids of Giza, in a special, unprecedented concert that was originally filmed for a televised broadcast. “I sang for the sake of art, for this place, and for the immense energy connected to Egyptian history,” says Said. Accompanied by the orchestra Les Frivolités Parisiennes, conductor Sammy El Ghadab, and performers on traditional Arabic instruments, she sings a range of arias, German Lieder, French chansons, and popular Arabic songs. Highlights include Puccini’s “O mio babbino caro,” Mozart’s “Non so più cosa son, cosa faccio,” Louis Guglielmi’s “La vie en rose,” Richard Strauss’s “Morgen!,” and Mohamed Abdel Wahab’s “La mosh ana-l-abki.”

Bertrand Chamayou’s new solo album is a complete recording of Mendelssohn’s 48 Songs Without Words. Chamayou describes the Songs as “very well known, yet little known at the same time”; only a handful regularly feature in concert programs, and there are still relatively few recordings of the full set. Viewing the Songs Without Words as a musical journal that Mendelssohn kept, intermittently, from 1829 to 1845, the pianist says: “Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words invite us to look within. As you listen to them you can (and should) let yourself go, to uncover a part of your own personal story and to embrace the inexpressible.”

Howard Shore: A Piano Tribute

In honor of Howard Shore’s 80th birthday on October 18, this collection of delicate piano arrangements pays homage to some of the composer’s most influential film scores, including The Lord of the Rings, The Fly, Hugo, and The Silence of the Lambs. The album features French pianist Aurélien Pontier with guest artists including soprano Natalie Dessay and violinist Nemanja Radulović. Shore himself, who was intimately involved with the project, performs the Synclavier on “9pm” from After Hours. Calling Dimitri Soudoplatoff’s arrangements “remarkable,” the composer comments: “It’s thrilling to hear my compositions in this form, both familiar and entirely new. A wonderful tribute.”

Carl Maria von Weber died 200 years ago this past June. To mark this milestone anniversary, Pierre Génisson’s new recording gathers together the composer’s complete solo, chamber, and concertante works for clarinet. These include his two concertos and concertino for clarinet, all recorded with the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg and conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy; his Grand Duo Concertant and Variations on a Theme from Silvana, both recorded with pianist Frank Braley; and the Clarinet Quintet, taken from Génisson’s 2017 release with Quartet 212. The clarinetist says: “Weber was the composer who truly established the clarinet as a major virtuoso instrument while revealing its uniquely expressive and poetic qualities.”

Augustin Dumay first performed Brahms’s Violin Concerto at just 13, thereby winning himself First Prize at the Paris Conservatoire. Now, 64 years later, the violinist releases his first recording of this masterpiece, bringing a lifetime of musical maturity and reflective depth to bear on the score. Recorded with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Eliahu Inbal, the concerto is paired with Brahms’s Horn Trio in E-flat, featuring Frank Braley on piano and David Guerrier on French horn.

Karl Richter: The Complete Teldec and Ducretet-Thomson Recordings

Karl Richter (1926-1981) remains one of the most significant figures in post-war Bach performance. In honor of his centenary on October 15, this set brings together Richter’s complete recordings for Telefunken-Decca (Teldec) and Ducretet-Thomson. Reflecting his activities as a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor, the collection is primarily dedicated to Bach, including seven works newly remastered in HD from the original tapes and available on CD for the first time. The remaining discs include music by Schütz, Handel, Monteverdi, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and Bruckner, as well as selections from the German Romantic organ repertoire.

Cristina Ortiz: The Complete Recordings on Warner Classics

This boxed set celebrates the artistry of Brazilian pianist Cristina Ortiz, bringing together the complete recordings she made for EMI Classics between 1973 and 1980. Recorded after her historic win at the 1969 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, where she became the first woman to win the gold medal, the collection features concertos and solo works by a variety of Romantic and 20th-century composers, including several of the pianist’s compatriots. Eight of the eleven discs have been newly remastered from the original tapes by Art & Son Studio and are released here on CD for the first time.
